Yoren's task and saves...

By thorin_81, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

The event Yoren's Task says: Any Phase: Discard 1 Night's Watch character from play to search your deck for 1 different Night's Watch character, reveal it, and add it to your hand. Then, shuffle your deck.

Ok, I am confused... Discarding a night's watch is a cost, but there aren't the magical words "cannot be saved". Does it mean that I can save that night's watch if I have in play Maester Aemon or Core Set Ghost and add to my and another night's watch?

My confusion origins from other cards like Old Bear Mormont: Response: Kill Old Bear Mormont (cannot be saved) to cancel the "when revealed" effects of a plot card that has just been played.

Ok, killing Old Bear is a cost like discarding a night's watch for Yoren's Task, but in this case the words "cannot be saved" are written.

Another question quite similar to me: the red viper of tales of the red keep says: If you are not running an Agenda, The Red Viper gains: "Response : After The Red Viper is killed, kill all characters in play."

Ok, same question: "cannot be saved" don't show on this card. But in this case I think it's a little bit different, because the text is not the same of Yoren Task or Old Bear Mormont.

Thank you in advance...

ok, thank you. I feared/hoped you cannot have that event for free...

Extending upon this -- In this case of Old Bear Mormont, I would not be able to save him with a card like Maester Aemon to prevent you from canceling a "when revealed" effects of a plot just revealed. The same is true for you. If I canceled Old Bear's ability with He Calls it Thinking, you would not be able to save Old Bear with Maester Aemon.

As for the Red Viper, him being killed to trigger his ability is indeed a play restriction and not a cost. An opponent could save him (i.e. use Maester of the Sun if it is Summer). This would prevent the play restriction of "After the Red Viper is killed" from being met, and thus prevent you from triggering his ability. If the designers did not want this to happen, they could have given The Red Viper the ability of "Cannot be saved."

EDIT: The edit feature on these forums is so poor. I originally had quoted ktom saying, "The other possibility is that without the "cannot be saved" text, your opponent has the option of saving your discarded character, effectively canceling your Yoren's Task. It's just leaving an extra bit of the gamespace open, even if no one ever uses it."
