Writing for Dark Heresy?

By Diel Ulricsson, in Dark Heresy

Greetings all,

I am interested to know two things from those among us who have written for FFG and specifically for the Dark Heresy system.

a) How did you get started working for FFG? (including how you approached them, what you said to make them accept you etc)

b) Do you have any advice for an aspiring contributor?

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

I didn't approach them - they contacted me. Since Dark Heresy was released, I've been writing stuff for it in my spare time, and putting bits and pieces of that on the net. Almost a year ago, I got an email from Ross Watson asking me if I'd like to write for FFG, and I accepted. I've since worked on a number of Rogue Trader supplements, including the forthcoming Into the Storm .

Be visible. There is, frankly, no better demonstration of what you're capable of than the work you produce.

That's my experience of the matter, anyway. I imagine every writer gets started differently...

Edit: Of course, there's also the more direct approach: www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_contacto.asp

That page provides a number of contact email addresses, including instructions for freelancers.

Whilst I'm not a writer, becoming a playtester is likely put through the same sort of system as becoming a writer. In my case, as with N0-1, I was contacted by Ross about a year ago, just after Rogue Trader had been released at Gencon, and asked if I had considered being a playtester. I filled in a few forms, filled in a few NDAs, and there we go, I was a fully fledged playtester.

Like N0-1, I'd suggest visibility. Being a fairly talkative member of the community, as well as being one of the admins over at Dark Reign, were probably my biggest assets, as they showed I cared about the community and had a love for the RPG line.

But yea, the link N0-1 has given you, with instructions for freelancers, is probably a very good start. I mean, it's probably a good idea to find out if they are looking for freelancers before trying to become one, after all.

Thank you both for your advice.

So it would seem the best thing to do is to generally start releasing stuff as fan in the hopes of getting noticed. Sounds like a plan!

Now I just need to think of things that need my attention in Dark Heresy...

To quote the great and misunderstood Inquisitor The Tick:

"I say to all you would-be villains out there: Knock off all that Evil!"
