UAPF: Tower

By Magnus Arcanis, in CoC General Discussion

Un-official Alternate Play Format:

Tower

How many players?:

2+

What you need to play:
Each player brings a single copy of 4 different cards of each faction including neutral (32 cards total). I recommend each player sleeves their own cards in an easily identifiable sleeve so when the game is over it is easy to claim what is yours.

How to play:
Shuffle all players’ prepared cards into a single deck placed somewhere all players can reach. All players shall use this central deck as if were their own and play the game out normally.
The player going first draws his opening hand first and other players in a pre-determined clockwise or counter-clockwise fashion draw their cards.

Author Notes*
- For a normal 1v1 game the central deck should contain 64 card with exactly 8 singleton cards for each faction. The cards you bring can be good, bad, a secret or predetermined. This will give each game a lot of varity and near endless re-play value.
- Try it out at your next game session or league play and let me know how it goes. Or if you have any question or comments on the Tower format for the Call of Cthulhu Card game just post it below
.

This actually sounds really cool Tom. I've always toyed with the idea of building a common deck with various card games and with my own designs as well. The idea that you may bring really crappy cards to mess up the play is appealing to me.

I played a version of this a little over 10 years ago for Magic: The Gathering. Everyone donated however many cards we wanted - usually commons but some were a little more insane, you'll find out why in a minute - & none of the cards were personally identified. We all drew from a well-shuffled communal deck. Instead of lands we just used upside-down cards of whatever colour we needed, much like resources in CoC. We played Magic as normal, except ignoring any cards that affected or manipulated the graveyard in any way. This is because, by our rules, any card that hits the graveyard is immediately destroyed . Yes, the actual cards were destroyed, at the bare minimum of beyond the point where it could be used again in play. There were a variety of methods: I've seen cards, drawn upon, torn up, cut up, punched with holes, eaten; one friend even smoked a card. This is what happens when you have more cards than you know what to do with.

We called this "Iron Man Magic."

Warhammer:Invasion has a version of this. Both players draw from 1 deck, but it also adds around 10 standard cards to go with this format.

So maybe for the CoC variant, add in a specific number of standard cards, agreed upon ahead of time?

I would appreciate knowing, if I may, as I tend to be meticulous about my posts & don't like errors & typos immortalized forever.

There's always the option of proofreading before hitting Publish... :P

True, that. But I can't always tell what my posts will look like until they're published. The entry system is a little obtuse, I feel.
