Motley Crewman + Jojen Reed... Illyrio's Illegitimate Child

By WolfgangSenff, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hey all,

I just picked up Illyrio's Gift and I'm loving it so far - a lot of great cards in it. I knew what they were ahead of time from the spoilers, but didn't think about all the ramifications of them until just now. My questions so far are limited to just one:

Motley Crewman says, "Any effect that discards 1 or more cards from an opponent's deck discards an additional card." This seems to be altering the card that it affects itself - so Frostfang Peaks would literally switch to discard 2 cards (3 if winter), while Jojen Reed would discard 4? To me, it seems pretty cool if you could get 4 with Jojen, and then if you do, does that include the power grab for it. Since it's not a response, it would be globally true, but does it count for the remainder of the gametext on the other cards, such as Jojen? Thanks.

Kyle

"For each copy of the named card discarded, Jojen Reed claims 1 power."

Nothing there limiting the check for the named card to 3. So long as Jojen's effect discards the card, he can gain power for it.

You are correct that Motley Crewman does not discard anything itself. It modifies the other effect, which does the actual discarding.

Is it possible to Facebook "Like" an answer? Cause I think that's really appropriate here. Thanks KT. :)

Does this work the same way for the Harbor Thug and Urchin? Or does the power grab on them only look at the first card, since the text specifies "if that card"?

I think it's pretty safe to say that the use of the singular pronoun in the "natural text" does not limit the check to just one card. When Motley Crewman modifies the Thug or Urchin to discard more than 1 card, I think you can take the broader approach that the pronoun refers to the card(s) discarded by the effect.

Anyway, if it did limit the check to one card, how do you know which one to check and which one is the "additional" card?

~Wouldn't the first player choose?
