Speculation on new products based on Small But Vicious Seminar

By ozean, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Now that FFG has posted that wonderful video featuring Jay's presentation during GenCon, it might be time to go for some systematic speculation on what products might follow Black Fire Pass and the Slaneesh chaos supplement. The last slide of the presentation offers a bunch of pictures. What can we discern on them?

I was inspired mostly by one picture (rightmost center), which seemed to display a pretty big, elven-design tower. That, I guess must be the Tower of Hoeth! So it seems that the expected elven supplement is hinted at here and it seems that it will tell us more about Ulthuan. (There also seems to be an Elf in the top center image.)

Then there seems to be a ghost like figure on the image which overlaps the elven tower. Looks like more undead are on the way, too!

But what inspires me personally most is the triptych in the bottom center. This looks like a tentacled creature in the sea! While memories of the Lord of the Ring’s watcher in the water are certainly raised by looking at these pictures, I would hope that this hints at a sea based adventure. Maybe even a crossing to the New World? The huge tentacled creature certainly seems powerful enough to remind me of more Cthulu-ish horrors – maybe we will get introduced to the Old Ones and their magics and the time when chaos came into the world? Doesn’t seem very likely, but who knows. At least we had several background story bits in the content so far that has pointed us to Lustria (the Tilean NPC in The Gathering Storm and some of the info in The Winds of Magic).

The lonely knight and the money wielding hands don’t tell me much and I cannot really discern what the more chaos-focused other images show. There could be a Chaos Sorceress battling an Ice Witch in the upper left corner (which would point to Kislev). The green creatures in the bottom left could be lizardmen, but they could also be Greenskins or anything else. Is the wood shown in the left center a swamp, part of the Empire’s forests, a dark part of Athel Loren, or is it set in Lustria? What do you think?

I also noted the tower and an Elven Supplement seems like an obvious and required supplement.

I also spotted the giant octopus style creature, and I get the impression that the WFRP V3 mechanics are relatively like descent (although I don't play that board game so have no real idea) but as that game had a sea fearing expansion, perhaps the intention is to bring some of the ideas and concepts of that game into WFRP and create an "explorer's or sea-farer's expansion"?

...I think I would be up for getting that,

Wasn't there also a mounted knight on the slide, could that suggest a Bretonian expansion, although I hope it will be better done that the 2nd ed version, which left me a little "cold" (although the grail knight info and mechanics were "ok")

so far though, i have been mightily inpressed with the FFG products, they simply reek of good ideas and well designed components and nothing I have purchsed yet has made me think, oh actually, I'm not going to use that, or this content is a bit stale....

....I even find a use for the GM's Screen, which did have some dubious choices for some of the info on it....perhaps the only thing so far that has even come close to 'Meh.... luckily though it came pacakaged with a load of location cards, hich i absolutely adore... quite possibly my favourite WFRP concept, anyway I digress.

I do think though that FFG will continue to produce supplements that have varied applications over and above perhaps main content, so that even if you don't use the main content, the supplemental info will still be useful, suh as WoM with corruption. SoF with disease and with OoW i think we will see permanent injuries and the like introduced.. infact i think that has already been mentioned somewhere?

Yes, Jay mentioned permanent injuries in his presentation. Poor PCs! demonio.gif

Interesting idea concerning the knight, who did indeed look quite Arthurian/search for the holy grail like!

Also: there were no images which made me think of Halflings or anything connected to them.

Oh did I forget to mention in my post ...

Jay suggested that perhaps, since there was a Ruinous Powers cycle of supplements, it might not be far fetched to think of the possibility of a Race cycle of supplements.

So, my guess would be a true Dwarf / Elf / Halfling cycle, possibly including Brettonia and Kislev for the humans.

A thought: the WFB 8th edition rulebook mentions Fimir by name (the first time, as far as I'm aware, they've been mentioned in many years). The Witch's Song happens in the marshes around Marienburg.

I wonder...

Now, I think that some pick are from those announced supplements like the Knight could be from Omens of War. But I can a proper anwser to those about elves, this could possibly mean that an Elf supplement will be coming but that's just speculations. We will have to wait and see. Now I'm just wiating for those announced titles - all of them. Can't wait to get and make my WFRP better and bigger.gran_risa.gif

I'd be interested in hearing what others think of the new content in the Creatures Vault, since this kind of got lost in the endless discussions about the contents of the hardback books and other vaults... :)

Personally I really like the notion of 'enemy party sheets' with morale, talent slots and special abilities and much prefer the notion of having enemy creature card that can be placed directly on the table as a visual aid without recourse to precarious balancing of open rulebooks, thereby endangering the flaky spine of the softcovers. It sounds like they could be used quite effectively alongside the Nemesis Organisation sheets in the GM toolkit, as the new sheets appear to be more 'tactical' in focus i.e. linked to an immediate encounter or combat, whereas the Nemesis sheets seem more strategic in scope i.e. the plans of the organisation maturing or suffering setbacks due to the actions of the PCs.

Just think of some of the emerging possibilities with new mechanics like disease/insanity that link into talent slots and can be used on NPCs. Plug in some insanity cards and add mutations to customise the more 'advanced' ranks of a Chaos cabal, and add Nurgle's Rot to a band of Skaven for some impromtu Plague Monks... just what the doctor ordered... (?)

As far as the Creature Vault is concerned I don't know if it could have been made better...individual creature cards...monster actions and sheets...I was in the process of creating monster actions already and now that offical versions are coming out I can stop that and focus on other aspects of my campaign. These new tools are going to make running encounters so much easier. Thanks for listening to us Jay. When you look at this game and the discussions in the forum and the presentations at seminars you really get the impression that the company cares what its players think and that WRFP 3rd edition was designed for playability and fun first and for most. Some might not like that the system has changed so drastically and that the game looks like a boardgame, but every single time I have sat down and played with some one new they have come away with all those notions dispelled.

it seems to me that the intention (or at least part) with the players and gm books are for players who wish so, can play the game without the cards etc. I'm curious how they intend that to work since quite a lot of the mechanics revolve around tracking different things like fatigue/stress and especially recharge of action cards.

I'd like to be able to play this game without having to use all the cards as it takes up far to much space for my liking. And it even keeps in feel with the none use of minis and gridmaps.

Yes, I think that the Lite version of the game is a interesting idea. I will read it and if my players would like to play Lite then it will be no problem for me. I'm really curiuos how it works with the Lite version. But after a lot of sessions I can say only one thing those cards are for me a blessing. I love to play with those and I see a lot of options that GM & Players has. So I think I will be still using cards.

And about Creatures Vault - has enyone notice that on this picks from Jay where Driads and a Wyvern. And on cards Gryphon nad Witch Elf. Also Jay mentioned Black Orcs. So I can't wait for the release of Creatures Guide & Creatures Vault.gran_risa.gif

Yeah creature vault sounds nice.

I agree, I like the cards alot as well, but I would like to be able to use them without needing to keep track of recharge tokens. Its a lot to ask for I know since some of the cards rely on recharge, so its probably for another game. still...

It will be interesting to see.
