Wonder what is next for Arkham Horror?

By Drakson, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Just got in my order today of all small and large expansions of AH except the King in Yellow and Lurker which I will order when KiY is available again. My wife and I spent almost 5 hours opening everything up and skimming rules and identifying new cards, and reading a few of each. I told her we have enough stuff to keep us busy for a year or more. We were discussing the expansions afterwards and were just impressed with the different amount of mechanics, boards, cards etc, and how much fun we are going to have. I want to start Tibs League pretty soon.

Anyway I have been looking through some of the fan based creations. A few had stood out, one with the Sea of Horror small expansion board. One with Grudunza street encounters and another guy working on a Lost in Time and Space board.

I was wondering what FF may have in store for the future of AH. It would seem like a small board of 4 or 5 spaces/encounters would be nice. I really liked the new street encounters Grudunza was working on. Anybody got an ideas or heard any rumors (those darn rumor cards) about what may be in store for this game. I have just totally fell in love with this game as has my wife. We have been playing 3 games a week so far. (our games now take about 2 to 2&1/2 hours). We are going to start playing extra investigators soon. Probably won't start playing with expansions for a while yet. I told her to expect to start getting devoured and not winning much after looking at expansions today.

I also enjoy this forum very much.

ENDLESSLY EXPANDING
Rumor

Ongoing effect: every 6-8 months, a new expansion will be added to the series of AH expansion sets. All Arkham (addicted :-P) players have to check whether their table is big enough to hold all the boards & materials. In case it is not, they have to buy a new table. In case the table is too big for their house, they have to buy a new house.

Pass condition: [...]

On a more serious note the only thing in the works I've heard of is a mysterious new Ancient One and Herald that should be appearing at the Arkham Nights event in October, we are all hoping it is made available to those of us who don't want to a couple thousand to make the trip to Minnesota.

Eventually, for big-box expansions, it seems like they might start running out of near-Arkham locations. At least locations with direct ties to Lovecraft lore.

But the small box expansions could continue for as long as they have card ideas.

I'm assuming there could be at least one 'mountains of madness' big box expansion. I could also see small box expansions built specifically for the big box expansions.

I've only picked up the CotDP expansion at this point. Out of our 'gaming' group there are only two of us who are hopelessly addicted to AH. So we play a few times a week. I think I may go pick up a big box today. So many choices.

I have all expansions save for the Lurker. If they do add another expansion, they should issue some rules as to how to play with all expansions more effectively. There's a flood of cards already, and while it's definitely fun to have more options for encounters and such, it's a pain to set up.

Ya, I have been reading through the cards for the expansions and can see that if you played with many at a time there would be a lot of cards you would never get to. I agree that if FF said something like "if you play with these expansions you should (or could) take these cards out of Mythos or Other World Encounter etc". There are some very similar cards and I have not even made it through all of them yet. It is amazing however how many different stories or instructions on the cards are still different and unique. Some people have some good imaginations.

I think some small expansions with 4 or 5 encounter areas would be good. I was surprised however when I got the big board expansions that all investigators still started in Arkham. I have only briefly looked at these as of yet but thought some would start in Dunwich, Kingsport or Innsmouth.

The investigators are supposed to be able to be included in any game, if they started in an expansion board they couldn't do that.

Guess that is why I am not a game disigner. I would have thought that perhaps they might have added a second starting location if you were playing with different expansions. Plus there could be an investigator in the area, but since I have not played any expansions yet, I guess the fun is getting to the area in time.

They could've given Dunwich investigators a Dunwich start location and made a rule that said "if you aren't using the Dunwich board, start these investigators on the train station." Although starting in Dunwich (or any other city) could be problematic if the majority of the action ends up happening elsewhere.

I would like a card expansion that adds more Mythos cards to the Dunwich, Kingsport and Innsmouth boards, and would also include cards to better facilitate use of all boards.

I'm glad you liked the Streets of Arkham. What I'd like to see at this point, instead of another big or small box expansion, is some kind of a medium box expansion. Some new investigators and GOOs, heralds and guardians, some kind of smaller sized board with a few locations and a specific purpose/feel to it, and some other miscellaneous new things (like maybe the Streets thing and the Clue Card deck that some have suggested).

Whatever is included in future AH expansions, please no more Other World cards, ever again. That stack is already enormous and ridiculous. I understand that if someone only owns the base game and just buys one new expansion, they might like to have some different Other World encounters, but really, that's not something that demands a whole lot of variety, IMO, and the bloat there is just way too heavy already.

Indeed, make more OW cards! But, make them Innsmouth style, so that they don't dilute the deck ;)

Julia is right about not having enough table space. I need to expand my table before I expand my collection of AH.

You don't need all the OW cards, just take the first sixty or so out and leave the rest on the box.

I wonder if anyone could Strange Eons up all the Starting equipment (e.g. Sister Mary's Cross) using a different background. This could then form a smaller pack of starting equipment thus making it a lot easier to find item X for character Y.

Well, on the surface that sounds like a great idea, but the problem is that those items and specific skills and Wendy's Elder Sign and all of those things are supposed to be limited in number... For example, if you have a specific "Elder Sign for Wendy's setup", then there will be too many Elder Signs remaining in the Unique Item deck.

Have to agree with G on this one.

Maybe, but many Investigators start with items that aren't as good as an Elder Sign. Also, if you are including Wendy you must be adding all the other Unique Items from Kingsport, so you're not unbalancing the game that badly.

That was just one example of many, though. Any character who gets a .45 or Food or a specific spell or skill or whatever makes it so there is one less of that particular item available... Sorry, but you just gotta search through the decks for setup each time, I'm afraid.
