The official take on this is that you have “learned all the career has to offer for you” after taking 10 advances. But I remember a longish discussion about this subject in the House Rules section, where several people said that they allow their players to take as many advances as they want before switching careers.
As another *alternative* rule you could allow a character to go through a career more then once. So take soldier 1st complete it (10 advances) then go through it again using all the rules you normally would in changing careers. This would represent a character becoming a better solider, possibly a sergeant for example.
Thank you guys for answering so fast.

That's a nice rule. I'll do that.

Thats the rule I use. In second addition you had to change to a better career to raise the limit on how you could improve skills. Now that limit is determined by Rank not career it makes sense to permit characters to repeat them as there is still something to learn. Also means that the shortage of advance careers isn't as much of a problem as some people make out.
You dont have to change when you get 10 General Career advances yet. You still have the 2 Non-Career Advances and you need to spend 1 Advance for the Dedication bonus. After that then you will have to change careers. There are some house rules as stated above but i dont see the need of them. You'll should only be gaining 1-2 Advance per Adventure. So if you max out in Advance for career 10(General) + 2 to 10(2Non-Career)+ 1(Dedication) + 0 to 4 (Career Change) = 25 (using max numbers). So you'll looking at 12-13 Adventures before a Career change has to happen. I did like the idea of onr GM giving 1 Advance per game night. They meet once a week which mean it would take 25 weeks till a career change.
