Newbie Players Introduction to the Warhammer World.

By GhostBlue, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi I'm going to be starting Eye for an Eye within the next month, then moving quickly on to the Stormdorf Campaign.

I will be running the game with three other players who have no experience of the Warhammer setting at all. I'm looking at creating a small handout maybe 3 or 4 A4 sheets that can be made in to some sort of pamphlet.

The idea behind this would be to give this to new players weeks before they turn up to there first adventure. This way they can digest the material before they turn up to play.

The pamphlet would contain things like:-

  • Short but interested history of the empire
  • A quick update of the current state of the empire that the players will be playing.
  • Small but detailed map of the empire.
  • A synopsis of game setting, to try and get the players to understand the feel of the Warhammer setting.
  • Maybe a very short story that really highlights the feel of the Warhammer world.
  • Section for D&D players, to understand the key differences between the two games. (So not to expect a hack un slash game)
  • A very condensed / summery of how the game works or plays.

Basically the main idea behind the pamphlet is to get the player in to the game setting before he has even started playing.

Now if anyone out there could help with this idea? I'm looking for anything that could help put this together over the next few weeks or so.

Things that would be useful:-

  • Links to website pages that may contain articles or user written content that may be used.
  • Anyone with ideas for any of the points above.
  • Maybe pointers to books that could be useful in helping me write some of this stuff.
  • Interviews with Jay Little that someone may think useful.

My problem is I know the type of thing I want but I'm not the best when it comes to creative writing.

Any input would be very grateful.

John.

I did a similar thing when introducing some of my home town RPG friends to Dark Heresy. They had no experience with Warhammer or 40K (Warhammer was a hobby I had in college, they either went to different colleges or didnt go to college and 40K was something I started in the Army). I bought a copy of the 40K Battles Boxed set (Assault on Black Reach) and it came with a great four page pamphlet that described the 40K universe quite well. I then handed them a few print outs from various Dark Heresy PDFs (map of the sector, example story and so forth).

So I would recommend printing out a copy of The Rat Catchers Tale, a few pieces of art from the setting and get the PDF for Warhammer Fantasy RPG (2E core would be ideal) and print out the section on the empire.

Then email them some links to various subjects you are interested in on Lexicanum (www.lexicanum.com)

Well, if you want to introduce the Old World to new players, I have the following tips for you:

-There's an Empire chapter at the end of the WFRP3 core rulebook. It's quite short, but includes history and overview of the are you are going to play. It's unnecessary for them to know more about the area.
-Give them the William King's Trollslayer novel. It contains short stories, which are easy and quick to read. The whole book won't take more than two afternoons to finish, but two or three stories should be enough to learn, that this isn't a merry high fantasy world. :)
-There are two movies, that are close to the feel of the Warhammer world: Alliance of the Wolves, Solomon Kane. Quite good ones too, in my opinion.
-Lexicanum and Hammer Wiki are also a good source of information.

Alliance of the Wolves

I assume that's what got called in English: Brotherhood of the Wolf.

And, yeah, excellent film.

You should try to begin in a small town, and make them discover the world through people reaction : fear of the dark, nobody travels by night, unknown dangers in forests that nobody dare to explore, tales of corrupting evil... Play some Chillin' adventure with more mood than action. When a fight occurs, make it really big and deadly (wargor in forest). The demo downloadable on that site is a good entry point.

Ah yes, le Pacte des Loups has got nobles, corruption, investigation and fights. Before being a director, Christophe Gans was a movie journalist. Back then he is the one who introduced HK movies in France (Tsui Hark's & John Woo's movies, Jet Li, Chow Yun Fat). Good Ol'times. He also directed Crying Freeman and the Silent Hill Movie.

You're right, translated it too quickly and didn't check if I'm right... Mea culpa. happy.gif

In fact, the litteral translation would be "The Pact of the Wolves" as it is "Le Pacte des Loups" in French.

I too very like this movie and it is indeed very Warhammery :)

I'd like to have you do this up so we could include it in the next edition of the Liber Fanitca. It would then receive massive attention as well and you could help out a lot of GM's.
