Final Sanction, in Miniature

By GalagaGalaxian, in Deathwatch

As an exercise in boredom, to practice my novice painting skills and in preparation to run the Deathwatch Demo-Rules for a few friends I have started working on minis of the pregens from Final Sanction. Today I finished assembling.

I'm pleased with generally how "accurate" I managed to make them to their portrait art, for the most part. Though obviously concessions had to be made here and there (such as Lucian's left-handed Narthecium). Gregor I went a bit more free-style with, cause I didn't like his art (I'm pretty sure it was a generic piece anyways).

I am both anticipating and dreading tomorrow, when I shall start painting them. I've only painted a few minis before, so I'm a bit intimidated by this spur-of-the-moment project.

Very cool.

I look forward to seeing the finished product.

Do you think you could post further information on what bits you used for conversions.

Well done. Very nice. I notice that you used regular Crux shoulders instead of Deathwatch shoulder pads, but otherwise nice.

They look fantastic. Don't worry about painting too much. the Deathwatch scheme is pretty forgiving. The only tricky bits are faces and the individual chapter shoulder pads.

@Brother Praetus- Those are the plastic deathwatch pads from the command sprue. They don't have the etched text that the metal ones do - just the inquisition symbol and the raised neck protector.

What sorts of bits were you interested in, I don't really know the specific origin of many of them, I litterally fished them out of a friend's massive collection of Space Marine bits. However if you like I'll try to make a list:

Elyas:

  • Standard Assault Marine Torso and legs
  • Dark Angels special Shoulder pad
  • Power fist and bolt-pistol are pretty standard ones I believe.
  • Blood Angels jump pack (scraped off a chalice on the back, a normal pack can easily suffice)

Overall easily enough made.

Sepheran:

  • Standard Aquila Torso, Blood Angel legs (both shins have two drops etched in)
  • Standard Heavy Bolter arms (prevented me from using a BA specific pauldron, sadly)
  • standard Devastator head and backpack

Overall another easy one

Lucian:

  • Pretty much pure stock bits, specifically Apothecary ones (backpack, Narthecium, Chestplate with ampullae), from the Command squad box set
  • Only special bit is an Ultramarines Pauldron

Overall another slime to make

Skold:

  • Double-headed Aquila chest (like on his art), and lots of wolf specific bits.
  • Head, Legs, backpack, shoulder pauldron with skin, and boltgun are all from the Wolf Tac Squad set. I chose runes in preference to things like wolf skulls and such. Looks cleaner.
  • Left arm is a bolt-pistol arm with the pistol snipped off and replaced with the blade from a marine scout, the blade is pinned. Right arm is a pistol arm as well upgraded to a boltgun (Did this for each of the tac marines, I didn't want guns crossing their chest covering up detail).

Overall: Needs Space Wolves bits

  • Octavius:
  • Legs are Chaos legs, not sure where the torso is from.
  • Left arm is pieces of 3 different arms actually. Started with a chaos arm holding that skull handle in reverse grip (I have no idea what it original was, it came snipped), snipped off another scout blade and pinned it into the hand, then cut the hand off the chaos arm and pinned it to another marine arm (less because it was a chaos arm and more because it was sticking almost straight out, making the blade nearly touch the base and press against his leg)
  • Standard generic backpack and right arm. Boltgun is from the Command squad box set. Helmet is a standard helmet too, I believe.

Overall: Lots of assorted pieces, dunno about making a perfect recreation, its no big deal though.

Gregor:

  • Torso I believe is a darkangel one? I'm not entirely sure. I saw the shield in the middle (perfect for doing a warden logo) and the tabard and couldn't resist.
  • Legs are pretty standard, the multiple purity seals make me think it might've come from a command squad box (my friend buys lots of this box "I've never bought a vanilla tac squad ever")
  • Pauldron is from the command squad box I know that.
  • Right and left arms are standard, right one is holding a grenade, while the left is a bolt pistol arm that was snipped and upgraded to bolt-gun.
  • Backpack is a standard one with a small sprue shaving added on to act as a spacer to give the "Sacris Claymore" (not sure where its from) more surface to glue onto.
  • Head I think was a Wolf head that I snipped the top-knot off of. Any bald marine head works though, really.

Overall: I went really "freestyle" with Gregor compared to his art, keeping only a few elements (No helmet, bald, tabard hanging from belt)

Yeah, unfortuantely the Deathwatch conversion kit is $25, and thats a bit much to spend on a spur-of-the-moment project. If I end up running or playing in a long-term Deathwatch game, I will consider getting the DW kit. However, I thought these shoulderpads were DW pads, just not as fancy as the kit ones? Why else would a Marine be wearing the Inquisitorial =][=? They're from the Space Marine Command squad box set.

I don't know. Maybe. From the angle they're at in the picture, the shoulders look like the Crux pads for veteran marines to me. I've only ever seen the metal Deathwatch shoulders, so that may be what's throwing things off for me. Either way, they're still very well done.

EDIT: Upon further review, I see. Sepheran is the only one with a good angle on the shoulder pad, but the flash did a little wash out on the detail. Had to look closer to catch it. lengua.gif

Well, I got some painting done on my Final Sanction minis done today. Here are the results:

Gregor and Octavius I'm basically considering "Complete", barring a bit of touching-up. Octavius came out a bit plain, but I'm rather pleased with Gregor. Especially the Warden lightning bolt freehand I did on the pauldron (the best emblem is a lot worse unfortunately). Sepheran is also complete (and already glossed, to be dull-coated later), however he doesn't quite count, as my friend basically hijacked him and did almost all the painting on him, often using him as an example of how to do the others. My friend also did the tabard on Gregor (somewhat annoyingly, I wanted to do that damnit).

The rest are only partially finished, requiring detail work. Lucian the Apothecary however is my great shame. The white came out TERRIBLE ("Oh just throw some Devlan mud on it and we'll see how it turns out"). I'm not sure what I can do at this point. I may give him over to my friend to try to fix/repaint but I fear the damage is already done. I did use multiple coats and a khaki/grey as undercoat first too. I'm not beating myself up too hard about it though cause I hear white is a real pain to get right.

The flash also distorted the colors a bit, Gregor's blue is a decent bit darker than the Ultramarine's blue.

Very nice.

I'm looking forward to finally using some of the Deathwatch models I made ages ago. Got a whole army of 'em - always loved the concept.

Little off topic maybe, but is that an Island of Blood box in the background?

Yeah, its my FLGS' store copy for demo games, some of the regulars are assembling and painting it.

As the "Friend in Question," Allow me clarify where these parts came from.

Gregor:
Torso is actually from the Command Squad box for the Chapter Champ.
The claymore is from the Black Templar Upgrade packs, with the decorative bits shaved off.

Elyas
The Powerfist comes with the standard Assault Marine sprue, as it's the pointing one. The head actually came from either the Dark Angel Upgrade pack or the Devastator Sergeant Head.

And yes, I bogarted The Blood Angel as I fully intend to PLAY him. Mwahahaha.

Mostly finished the Final Sanction minis today.

Unfortunately the flash really killed the photos this time, they're mostly washed out. Thus I'll skip individual pics. I'll have to retake them tomorrow, maybe do it outside for more natural lighting. I am also realizing that the Camera is merciless, the flash points out even the tiniest nicks and mistakes. It doesn't help that the it also brightens all the colors, meaning the dark blues of the Storm Warden, the Dark Green of the D.Angel and the various reds that kinda blend into the black normally stand out vibrantly in the photos.

Still, barring some touch up work they're basically done. Credit for fixing the Apothecary's white parts goes to my pal. Next time I'll try to do better with white (and no Throne damned Develan Mud).

All very nice.

Thanks for posting the great picks and special thanks for posting the bits. Its been way too long since I made some custom creations and both you and your friends work is getting me a little inspired; maybe I will be dusting off the old bits box soon and make sure my paints haven't all dried out.

Ah! So you're the guy who's been posting these on 4Chan. gui%C3%B1o.gif

And a few other places I frequent that are related to 40k and the like. So?

More opinions and possible advice on what I can do to improve never hurts.

So?

Don't worry, I didn't take offense from it. Curse the internet and the difficulty in reading people's tone of voice.

Anyways, as Dexter would say, "My greatest work is compleeeeted!"

Overall I am rather proud of how they turned out, considering I'm almost a complete novice. Unfortunately I made another newbie mistake in that I seem to have botched the matte clear-coat somehow. They're a bit... "Fuzzy" and have greyish speckling. Its only really noticeable in direct sunlight and mostly on Octavius. Oh well, I'll live.

I'm am pleased with the fact I managed to get them **** close to their portraits, with the exception of Gregor, who I went pretty freestyle on.

+1 Thats all I need to say.

Just came across this and though I should say very nice

Free bump for awesomeness.

Double thumbs up. The only thing that I'd add was a treatment of the bases. Other than that, a very good job, Brother.

Really nice work man, you did a great job of reproducing the artwork in miniature! Nice looking minis like that are a huge asset to a game, they make people want to play even more (and hopefully stay alive longer).

I plan to do the same thing, only right now I'm not certain our group is keeping their introductory characters, so I'm gonna hold off until the core book comes out and everyone gets sorted. Thank you very much for listing the source of all the pieces, that will be a huge help when I go bits-hunting!

quick guide to general deathwatch bits:

Space Marine Commander: comes with one deathwatch pad, and LOADS of cool wargear. combi-weapons, pistols, power swords, storm bolters - if you need options, you cant go far wrong here.

Space Marine Command Squad: comes with 2 Deathwatch Shoulder Pads, and a decent amount of firpower and options for customisation, including those nifty chapter champion pads.

Space Marine Devastator Squad : BIG GUNS. nuff said :P

Space MArine Assault Squad: if you need jump packs and a plethora of pistols and chainswords, a good bet. keep in mind though that you get plenty of these guns in the other boxes.

Deathwatch Accessories sprue: comes with 10 heads, 10 pads and 10 special issue boltguns. the catch? everything is about 75% the size of the rest of the range. the boltgun is a bit weedy despite its otherwise good looks, the heads look dwarfish on modern SM bodies, and the pads are a mm or 2 shorter than plastic pads. if you can oversee these discrepancies, worth the money.

Forgeworld Umbra Ferrox pattern boltguns: FW have just released a load of retro armoured SM, and these boltguns are the highlight. i intend to use them for my Deathwatch when i get around to making them. also a fan of the Maximus and Crusade armour.

Forgeworld Space MArine Chapter Pads: they also do a range of shoulder pads with sculpted chapter markings, like the GW ones. nice.

Chaos Space Marine Range: probably a few cool boxes here for more ancient/unorthodox marines.

Black Templar/Space Wolf/Dark Angel Veteran Accessories boxes: if you have cash to spare on making every member truly individual, these boxes have plenty of extra parts to make them stand out as belonging to their chapter.

Bits Websites: there are plenty of places where you can pick up individual bits, but they tend to be out of stock on the most useful stuff. worth a look for the plastic Deathwatch pads though.

Some nice conversions there mate! :D

Don't really know what you're talking about there. The Deathwatch conversion pack was designed for the current Marine sprues, and as someone who has heaps of both, there's virtually no difference. I don't use the heads because, well, who wants 5 of the same helmetless head on their DW Marines, but the Shoulder Pads and Bolters are fine.

Oh, and you forgot a couple:

Space Marine Terminator Squad: Comes with a single Deathwatch Pad made for Terminator Armour.

Dark Angel Accessory Sprue: Has a Dark-Angel themed Deathwatch Pad.
