In the wake of GenCon

By skeletonator, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

Now that I've had a day to recover from the sensory assault that is GenCon, I'd like to say a few things about the experience.

First of all, a shout out to our whole frigging community. I mean, seriously. Walking around, I overheard Magic players, and saw a fair amount of people playing other games, and I'm so happy that I play Thrones. I'm not sure there's a better group of guys (and Katie) out there. I didn't have a single NPE. I had fun in every game, including the two melee games where I tanked. I think our community realizes that, at the end of the day, it's a game.

Second - a hearty congratulations to all our big winners. Brett for the Melee, myself, and...shoot. Some guy...he won overall. I think his name is Captain Moustachio? Someone's going to have to remind me. Anyway - I watched some videos of the final Melee table that Mike uploaded and that level of stress would have given me an anuerysm. Congrats to everyone who was at GenCon, period - remember, just by showing up you proved that you're one of the top 50 Thrones players in the whole country.

Long post short, I had a blast, and I feel like I really connected with a lot more people this year, from all over the country. Thanks to everyone who was there for making it such a great experience.

I concur! I great group of people. I made many friends, and lost many games. I can't wait until next year. gui%C3%B1o.gif

A hearty third from me as well. I'm so glad we don't chant before we start our events..... And now I'll hijack this thread to give my thoughts and musings about the event.

I played (well I guess you can call the scholck I did playing) in both the Melee and Joust. In the melee I never seemed to have a problem with the pre Gen Con fear of pre made alliances. If they were there I didn't notice them. Table politicing was there of course, namely Luke convincing our table to leave him alone so he could win Twice. (Got to love random pairings). Also, Bara/NW with the wall might make a cool deck, but it also scares the crap out of people so they mostly all target you. Whoops.

In the joust I started with the great Michael Ballack v Michael Ballack square off with Michael Ballack winning of course. I saw a nice variety of decks including a Lanni/Martell treaty deck that locked me the **** down. If I wasn't being knelt I was losing icons. Awesome. I may have finished somewhere far far away, but it was a blast. Although FFG should invest in a megaphone to call out the matchups and what not.

~I'm pretty sure getting Lady Gaga stuck in you oponent's head is unsportsmanlike conduct! Especially in the championship joust game!!! lol.....

Seriously though, the community deserves major recognition for a great week of events. I missed most of the con because I was having too much fun just hanging out with everyone in the AGoT community.

Congratulations to all the champions on their well earned victories.

this got screwed to all hell...see the post below for what it should look like.....wish we could delete posts.

Congrats to all the winners (official and un-official events).

Also great job DeathJester for runner-up in Joust!! And Chaos for top4 in Melee. California represented well for only 2 players!

Glad you all had great time.

Sorry, if it makes you feel better i wasn't enjoying it very much either ;) Lanni is just not my playstyle.

Again, my fault.....actually its kpmcoy's fault as he had leaving on a Jet Plane stuck in all of our heads so the lady gaga song (poker face I believe) was payback to him that backfired.....oh well

Yeah, I might have lulled them into a false sense of security the last few years. I would print the pairings and post them so no one had to yell them out and as for pre-event announcements, well, my voice carries.... It's possible I left Nate and Joe without a good sense of the "small" details like this.

~ Part of my evil plot to keep making sure FFG wants me to TO the AGoT Gencon events.

Are the videos of the final melee table available on line somewhere? They would be really interesting to watch.

This is Mike Pateras' YouTube page - updates 10ish through 14ish are the final melee table. Obviously, he can't do a running commentary (super distracting) but he gives little updates.

There were quite a few things I would "fix" if I do this again next year posting table pairings and table results slips would be at the top of that list. And numbering the tables. With 44 players it seems like it would be difficult to track down your opponent unless you already knew them.

Very nice job, Alec. After watching your game with Erick, you certainly have a flair for the dramatic, I must say. :)
