Questmaking, monsters, and wealth accumulation

By Konquest, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

In dungeons and dragons, monsters and encounters usuallloy have an amount of treasure based on their difficulty for the average party. Entering into the brave world of quest making, I found it very difficult to make areas and rewards balanced for both sides, since there aren't very many guidelines. So I was wondering if anybody had made some sort of guide for treasure amount based on the differant monsters and their respective worth. I reversed engineered "The Rescue" quest and guesstimated that hellhounds and beasts men are worth about 200 to 250 gold respectively. what would you estimate the treasure value of the other monsters to be worth?

Hellhunds have nothing to do with beastmen. Money is not proportional to the number of monsters you kill, but to what you will need. For example, if you are going to use altars (from an expansion) you'll need to reward the heroes with gold for something they do before the altars. Also, if an encounter has a very powerful monster (for the current chest level) you should allow the heroes to get enougth money to get another treasure from the shop or an extra black die.

Play some quests from the book (1-5 should give you ideas) until you know how the game goes. Some of the best fanmade quest inlove somthing different from the typical (which is what you'll find on the book). So once you get an idea for a quest, try some layout that matches your idea, and add the rest so that there is some balance. You are right, there are no gidelines to make a fanquest. It's like an art. You'll need some experience as a player before you make your first decent quest.

I dare say you haven't played much (otherwise you souldn't have compared hellhunds and beastmen). Try to understand that you are not killing monsters to get treasure, but the other way round. If there is treasure, that's because you will need it later (or immediatly) or because it's a trap that will only slow you down.
