Super huge detailed map of The Old World

By Gitzman, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

Hi all

Gitzman allowed me to play a bit with his map, and use my Google Api knowledge to enhance it.

The result can be found here: www.gmtools.excelocms.com/oldworldmap.html

This is the Gitzman's map in full screen powered by Google Api v3.

You may add, remove and drag markers on this map.

You may add notes to markers.

You may measure distance (both in kilometers, and miles, using either simple ruler, or by drawing a path) between places (distances were based on this: www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp thread).

While measuring distance you will also be informed about estimated travel time (you can change the travel speed, and how many hour per day you travel by filling the proper fields).

And at the end you may save all the markers and notes you added to a file (you may load this file later and the map will automatically adjust).

Enjoy!

A special thanks to Sunatet, the end result really looks great.

We'll try to add some more bits to the map over time, perhaps colore, increase the quality of the image, expand the borders, etc.

For now though, enjoy!

Game on!

Gitzman

P.S. Im currently working on a vector version of the map which should allow for infinite quality on zoom levels, clearer text and images, and possibly color if i can find a good way to do it.

Will you be restoring the names that were cut/cropped along the borders? Such as Grunwald, Bratian, Ahlbeck etc along the Talabec, Wurzen in Ostland, Steinhof (the place was erased by the text "Zwolen"), Grenzburg (here it just says "G"), Bechafen in Ostermark ... It would make the map even better!

Yes indeed. Its hard to find all those places now, and people like yourself have been helping me relocate the 'casualties' of cartography.

I'll try to incorporate those into the next release.

Great work Glitzman and Sunatet! Have been drooling over this for a while now.

Fantastic use of google maps. I really like this.

Are you, by any chance, thinking about releasing this as a stand alone / offline version?

Thanks Alp happy.gif

Standalone I will not make, becouse my area of expertise is web based stuff, and technology (plus some javascript portion of Strange Eons), so generally I don't even know where to start lengua.gif.

It would require different approach and technology (maybe FFG could surprise us, and make an interactive map, like they did with dice roller).

The map itself can be found on Gitzman's page in pdf here: www.gitzmansgallery.com/Warhammer_Maps/index.html

great effort putting this into a google-app thing, but I'm not sure the scale is implemented correctly.

Measuring using the path tool I get about 165 miles between altdorf and middenheim along the road. the forum thread referenced the distance is 220 miles. The black spectrum map of middenland also has a 150 mile scale and it seems much farther tahn 165 bertween those two major cities.

can you check this?

great work melding them together though.

Chern

Truly magnificent work Gitzman and Sunatet aplauso.gif, I can hardly wait to start examining the map in greater detail.

Of course now that the old world is available through google maps I have to ask... how long till "google street view: Old World edition" is made available. I understand it might be difficult and that many camera men might be devoured by all kinds of beasties but I am sure you could find many volunteers around the boards....

This is indeed very awesome stuff. Is there anyway to get the viewport into the google map bigger? I'd like to see it as large as my monitor so I can scroll around and zoom in and out til my hears content. Am I missing a button or something? Also, how are people getting distances from one place to another?

again, thanks guys. truly some dedicated fans out there!

So Sunatet and I each have a different version of the same map running based on Gitzman's map. Sunatet provided the code, i provided the map.

Sunatets version has some functions which allow for placing markers, a larger view screen, measuring distances.

Gitzmans version is the same map just with a smaller view window so it fits on the Maps page at Gitzmans Gallery. The full map is available to download there via a PDF and you can full screen all you want, or even go to kinkos and print it out.

The full screen map with distance measuring is here: www.gmtools.excelocms.com/oldworldmap.html

In the right top corner is "Tools" menu, click it, and it will expand.

Then there is a "Distance checking" section, you may choose 2 rulers from:

- simple ruler add 2 markers on map (they appear in the same place at start), move the markers to get the distance (a window will appear in top left corner)

- path ruler does not add any markers, you add them by clicking on the map, each next marker added will be connected with the one added before, distance will be counted in exact same way like in case of simple ruler. You may also click (and hold the mouse button) and drag the marker to another place (distance will adjust automatically)

Hope it helps.

yes! perfect. i didn't know the map was living in two places (sorry, i jumped to the end of the thread hoping to see the map the furthest along and obviously missed some posts). very awesome stuff!

Is there going to be an update that adds 3rd edition landmarks? Such as Hugeldal (this was mentioned in 2nd edition, but it's not on the map), Stromdorf and there was a village mentioned in TGS while travelling to Stromdorf that I forget the name right now.

You got it!

I've been working (and am nearing completion) of a full color version of the map i shared with you guys earlier. I have added all known 3rd edition locations, fixed numerous errors and added LOADS of content to the map and its surrounding regions.

I have added a large portion of Norsca, a large portion of the Badlands, a large portion of the Darklands, Troll Country, and Albion to the map in addition to rescalling and redrawing almost the whole thing.

I cant wait to share it.

Wonderful! :)
Looking forward to looking at it!

Is there any way I could get my hands on these work-in progress files? I'm running a campaign in Bretonnia and I've altered the map of L'Anguille a little and would love to use the map. I just don't want to confuse my players anymore with different maps. Altering it a bit would make my game!

I appriciate the request, but i do not want to release the file until it is complete. I will likely not release the PSB file. However, i may post a lower quality jpeg at some point to give a teaser.

I am actually quite close to completing the project. The only elements left to do are to draw the raods and to resize and colorize the location texts.

After that i'll PDF it and post it. At the same time i'll get it sliced up and incorporated into the Google Maps view.

Gitz

Okay. I appreciate the work anyway! How about the font so I can build it from jpeg after the release? gran_risa.gif

Doc,

Send me your map, i'll build it into Bretonnia. That way you can use the whole dang thing instead of trying to rebuild what i made.

The amount of data in Bretonnia is a little slim compared to the empire anyway so i dont mind adding a few more locations.

Gitz

Grenstadt career compendium p212

make sure it's on the map

jh

I might need help with that one. Do you have a copy of the map you could show me? I only have a few army books which have nice realm specific maps. Bretonnia is not one of them unfortunatly.

From the map you guys have seen, i have added the following in the new edition:

  • Troll Country
  • Nordland
  • Norsca
  • Worlds Edge Mountains
  • Athen Loren
  • The Badlands
  • Northern Khemri
  • Northern Araby (just the tip... just for a second.. well you know the rest lol)
  • Western Darklands
  • Albion
  • Loads of Dwarf Holds
  • Loads of Skaven Lairs
  • Loads of Orc & Goblin Tribes

I'll try to fill out some content from bretonnia if i can and of course add the rivers Emerikol and Gitzman in the Wasteland (yes i will use the proper names dont worry).

Done and Done Doc =)

Your locations are in.

The map is just about done. Just finishing up the roads, a little Q&A and i'll post it for you guys to review.

Couple days i'd guess.
