New to the game

By busby2, in Mutant Chronicles

I'm new to the game but not exactly new to the entire theme. Back in the day, I played Siege of the Citadel (presently looking for someone who has a copy!) , the second tabletop game that involved figs other than a Bishop or Checker piece. The other being a game played on a table-like mat that I am going to assume was very much like or -was- Battlelore.

Anyway, to the point of this post:

I am new to the community and this new game as well. I'm looking to start collecting the game and need some advice on where to start. I plan on going down to my local gaming center and purchasing the Startup box set, but what else do you think I should purchase? A first/second booster pack?

Along with finally getting into the game, I'll be working on trying to get my community involved. Right now they are big time Warhammer/Warmachine players but aren't exactly against collecting a new game system as they hold a different themed tournament each month, highlighting different strategy/collectable games.

Additionally, does FFG have any plans for expanding the game to include other armies/corporations?

Finally, I'm looking for advice on getting people involved in this very fun and unique gaming system so that it may flourish!

Thanks!

Personally I think you should play the game first so you can get a feel for the flow of the game. Also once you get your hands on the Starter box it will have all the cards of most of the current figs on the market. Karak and the Ice Golem aren't in there. They come with their respective booster boxes. You will want to know how the game plays and what the different figures can do before buying just any booster. Unless you have disposable cash. If you do, can I have some? Anyways that's just my thoughts.

Oh and welcome to the gang of growing MC players. There are a lot of helpful people here to help with rules question and other stuff.

PS: I miss Siege of the Citael it was a blast!

Hey any chance you live in Southeastern Wisconsin? I play regularly on Tuesday nights.

Well, like Cyborgtrucker said : buy a starter, try the game (don't forget to download the faq : the starter army builds given in the rulebook are mistaken)... You'll get the stats for all the figs, so it'll be easy to plan what to want to buy once you have the starter. You'll see each faction's strength, see which of them suit your playstyle (Capitol : long range shooty/quick moves, Algeroth : big figs/heavy melee brawlers, Bauhaus : armored/good firepower/not as many comboes as others, Brotherhood : melee oriented/lot of healing/lot of "magic" tricks).

In the starter, you'll get Capitol and Algeroth figs. To expand on those forces, I'd consider buying Advanced Recon (more ranger goodness for Capitol !), Nepharite Overlords and Gomorrian Hammer for Algeroth. Necrotech could also be a good choice over Nepharite Overlords to expand on Algeroth forces (gives you 4 figs instead of 2 - though it's 2 big ones, and they look rather spectacular !).

If that can help, here's the review I wrote on BGG : www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/358768

You'll find the game shares some mechanics with Siege of the Citadel (special dice) : it has more in common with Siege than it has with Warzone, actually.

FFG will release a new map pack in 2009 (great news !), and is already releasing a new faction, Ilian, which is a demonic faction (like Algeroth), though it's more tricky than the brutal Algeroth army.

To get people into the game, demo it, and try to build armies that underlines each faction's specific strength. I'd advise you to play 5/5/5 scale games (they're much funnier, IMHO, than 3/3/3 ones), with a single Victory zone at the center of the map.

I'm just getting into it. I learned of the game at my local games store in Wisconsin. Looking through the starter box like Cyborg said is the best advice. I used to play the RPG and was hoping with Ilian Mistress of the Void that there would be some female figures. Golgotha is nice but it's like they crossed China the Wrestler with an Octopus! I'm hoping for more figs of women in the future. But the bame is great and fun to play!!!

Hey, thanks for all of the replies!

I do plan on purchasing the starter box and likely the suggested additions to help highlight both of the included armies contained within the box. I THINK I have convinced the wife to at least help me learn the new game mechanics for the game before I rush off and try to demo it to my local gaming shop.

Sadly, I do not live in Wisconsin, I presently live out near Fort Campbell, Kentucky (Clarksville, Tennessee to be exact).

Again, thanks for the comments and I can't wait to get involved with Mutant Chronicles again!
