Movement Question

By Little Teacher, in WFRP Rules Questions

PC1 and PC2 are engaged at Long range from a beastman. PC1 takes the 2 manoeuvers to get from Long to Medium. How far apart are PC1 and PC2? It seems reasonable that, to reengage with PC1, PC2 would have to also spend 2 manoeuvers. This would imply that they are medium range, yes?

None of my players, or the GM (me) like the movement system in this game. It was offered that it would be easier to just put a number of tokens between engagements equal to the number of manoeuvers it would take to get to that engagement from where you are. And then, if we need worry about the official range increment (for a ranged attack or something) we just count how many tokens there are between places (1 is close, 2 is medium, 3/4 is long, 5/6/7 is extreme). Has anyone tried that?

There is no specific exact unit of measurement but that is a reasonable use of it.

Oddly enough that's exactly how I handled it in the last session because there were basically 4 separate battles going on all over the place and it was easier to track relative distances by the maneuvers it took to get there then trying to use the default 1, 2, 3, & 4 token setup. It worked really well but it just requires lots of tokens on the board.

Well, if they are at Long range, technically they aren't Engaged with the Beastman. <grin>

Yes, because they are 2 manoeuvers apart, which equals medium range.

If it works for you, sure go ahead.

To avoid overusing tokens when using this method you could also use a couple of d8 or d10 to track distances.

Yep or using the Headless Hollow ref sheet they have at the end counters that say close, medium, long, extreme on them. They work pretty well too.

Our group neither. So we decided not to use tokens at all.

I've explained our house rule in this post :
http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_foros_discusion.asp?efid=166&efcid=3&efidt=322599

Here's the short version :

The relative distance between characters and locations is let to the interpretation of the GM (we don't use tokens to track distance), but follows roughly those guidelines :

- Characters whose stand-up's base touches are Engaged.

- Characters in the same room or in proximity are in Close range.

- Characters not in the same room or with some distance between them are in Medium range.

- Characters far enough that we don't put their stand-up on the table are in Long range.

- Extreme ranges are use only narratively since the only weapon that can fire at this distance is the longbow. Characters who spot ennemies at this distance will either try to close-in, flee or sneak, or let them close-in while firing at them with their longbows. Neither require map or stand-up.
