"Fast" and relevance

By TheProfessor, in CoC Rules Discussion

So I keep thinking I read somewhere that Fast only works on struggles to which the fast character contributes. (e.g. Magah Birds are fast, but they won't help win a tie on combat because they don't have combat icons.)

But, I don't see anything in the Rules or the FAQ about this.

Am I completely imagining this, or was it written somewhere?

"When resolving a story, the player who controls the most Fast characters
committed to that story wins all ties during icon struggles
and when determining success at that story." (p. 11)

Committed to that story and at that story. I read those like you felt they should work, as in Fast only counts for those in the story you're resolving.

Or were you specifically talking about struggles? I don't see anything that Fast characters need icons to put their Fast to use, just count # of Fasts and see who wins ties.

I meant individual struggles.

I know the rules don't put any restrictions, but I seem to recall reading something somewhere (an to an Asylum pack? Don't know...) that only struggles for which the Fast character had icons benefited from the Fast ability. But I don't know if this was just an hallucination or not...

Fast applies to every icon struggle and determine sucess tie that is not a tie to zero, the problem is, if you have a Fast character that does not have icons of the struggle you are resolving, chances are that you don't have icons of that struggle at all, so the tie would be at zero and Fast wouldn't kick in. Of course, if you have other characters that have that struggle icons, and you are tied at one or more with your opponent, then the Fast character would make you win the struggle even if that specific characters doesn't have icons.

Ive always played the way TheProfessor is thinking: That for each struggle you compare the icons and fast , and if a card with fast didn't have a specific icon for a struggle, it wasnt counted when comparing ties, but looking at this, I may be wrong. Other ones like toughness or willpower apply to any struggle regardless of icons, why wouldn't fast ?

Yes, the rules and FAQ make it clear that Fast applies regardless of icon ownership. So if I send, for example, Magah Birds with my other characters, their fast applies to every icon my team possesses.

I just thought, for some reason, that I had read something to the contrary. But for the life of me I can't figure out where it was (if it was). Since noone here has any recollection of reading this, I probably imagined it.

Maybe the ccg rules had something?

And the final skill struggle too. That's something that a lot of people overlook. Sorry if somebody already mentioned it in the thread, I must confess to not having read the rest.

What would have been the interest to give Magah birds Fast, as they have no icons ???

The professor is totally right, Fast helps during the whole story phase called "Resolution" !
