Questions about skills and skilled term

By Quirk2, in Dark Heresy Rules Questions

We are a group of players who just picked up the Dark Heresy-book, and we cant find anything about how you become skilled in certain skills. We figured so far that you should probably be skilled in the Advanced skills, since otherwise, you shouldnt have them, right?

But how do you become skilled in the Basic skills? We have read through the skills section thrice and the other possible places in the book , but we still cant find it.

We would appreciate if you guys here could help us out =3

The book does cover all this, but you can't use Advanced skills at all unless you are trained in them, and you can use Basic skills without being trained, but only at half of your characteristic rating. You only start off trained with the skills your homeworld/career says you do, you have to buy the rest with XP.

To become Skilled in a Skill, you have to take the Skill as an advance, be granted the skill by a backgroud package, or career starting skill.

For example, Dodge is a basic skill. Everyone can test at 1/2 Agi to dodge. If you are an Assassin, you get Dodge as a skill as part of your starting skills, so you test Dodge at full Agi. If you are a Guardsman, you have to spend xp on the Dodge advance to become skilled at Dodge. Different careers get access to skills at different ranks, so check the advancement tables for when/if a class can learn a skill.

Also, so background packages give access to Advance skills as a basic skill. Such as the Feral world package lets you test Navigation (surface) as basic (half characteristic).
