Mists of Zanaga: Ritual Track Question

By tazbro, in Runebound

Maybe its me but ....
I'm confused as to how to handle adding new cards to the Ritual Track.

on page 10 of the rules: ... Drawing Ritual Cards "........ are placed to the right of any other cards on the ritual track."

OK .... The ritual in position 1 is completed and there are cards in positions 2 & 3.
Later a ritual card is required to be added.
Which position is it placed in?
Position 4 (the next position that is to the right of cards on the ritual track) - per page 10 rule?

The confusion lies in the statement on page 9 under Placing Ritual Tokens 3rd paragraph ...." If the ritual track is full with six cards and there are still no ritual cards with a matching symbol, the token must be placed on the leftmost ritual card."

There will be times when the ritual track will not have six cards if we are to follow the rule on page 10

Once a ritual is removed, are all the rituals supposed to shift to the left to fill the empty position on the track?
There is nothing in the rules that says this, but how else are we to comply with both of these rules?

I also think this is the only solution. Perhaps we're inclined not to shift cards because the Rituals are placed above the Undefeated Encounter Track, that doesn't shift in normal games. The Zanaga Rules give only reference to "left" and "right", not numbered positions, so there's no chance to have empty spaces in the Ritual track. I assume we're supposed to consider the Ritual cards as a continuous row and shift them if holes distract our eyes too much.

I suspect you are correct.
However, the rules make it confusing.

On page 4, Game Setup number 7 ....

"Place Ritual Cards : Draw three cards from the green ritual deck and place them faceup on the undefeated challenge track. This area is now considered to be the RITUAL TRACK ." So the undefeated challenge track is now the Ritual Track.

The Game Setup diagram on page 5 also shows the cards covering the number on the track. The track is being used.

I suspect the designer's intention is to shift the cards on the Ritual Track to the left in order to fill any vacant positions.

Yeah, but there's no direct correspondence between the numbered track slots and the Ritual Track, it's just a visual ambiguity. It's like the Roaming Challenge track that's on the bottom of the game board. It works exactly the same, but you're not confused by the second one because you don't see numbers there.

Cards on both tracks can be resolved at random times, there's chance to have empty positions in the Roaming Challenges too. I think they should be handled the same way: you have to consider them a track where no holes can remain (= shift to the left when this happens).

I'm glad this is cleared up!

It is so easy to just place a ritual card in the vacant position.

(I wonder how many people were playing this mechanic incorrectly?)
