Round up or round down ?

By Xanatov, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Hello,

Still not finding answer to a question:

There are many situation where we have to halve some dice rolls, or stats, yet not all of em says if it s round up or down (ex: the short range for spaceship weapon that is the halved standard range).

Is there some errata about:"round up (or down) by defaut ?"

Thanks again for your answers.

This does seem to be an issue that could use clarification. I can't recall any hard and fast rounding rules.

For true grit you round criticals up, You also round up when altering the strength of crippled ships batteries but on the preceding line you are instructed to also reduce speed to half but given no guidelines on what way to round.

Can't recall any specific instances of rounding up so maybe that's the way to go.

There does not seem to be a consistent rule in place.

The instances that I'm aware of:

untrained Basic skills (round down)

primitive armor vs. non-primitive weapon (round up)

speed with poor bionic locomotion (round up)

fettered Psy rating (round up)

Climbing speed (round up)

For weapon range, rounding isn't technically necessary. Short range is less than half the range. So for a hand cannon with a range of 35, thats 17.5 meters. An enemy 17 meters away would thus be within short range.

For starship movement, it would be nice if it was explicitly stated, but I would think that it would be round up considering all the other half-movements are.

If you had a question on a school assignment and were told to round to the nearest whole number, which way would you round ?

I've always been taught that if rounding is needed 0.5 or higher gets rounded up, everything else gets rounded down. I've always assumed that I am to use regular math rules, unless the rules state otherwise.

All of Moribund's examples round in the same way, except untrained basic skills. But they are the area where the rounding direction has the least effect.
