First game last night, some questions

By Paul Grogan, in CoC Rules Discussion

Apologies for the noob questions.

Played last night for the first time with a player of M:TG. Some questions came up. He asked if actions could be taken 'in response' to something else. I was pretty sure the answer was 'No', the only things that are used like this are cards which say "Response". So, I play an action which wounds one of his characters. He cant sacrifice that action in response if the card says "Action: Sacrifice this card to do something cool"

Specific card questions:

Visiting author. Can the ability be used if the card was used as a resource and it was discarded because it is transient

Ravager from the Deep. If I commit this to a story in my turn, am I right in thinking all my other characters take 1 wound, and the other player takes none because none of his characters are committed yet?

Jack "Brass" Brady. How does this ability work, and why would you use it?

Y'Golonac. Does the ability have to be used before the opponent commits to force him to commit, or could you wait until he says "I commit none" and then after that make him commit? i.e Can this ability be used in the Action step after the opponent commits characters.

And story cards... Am I right in thinking you always play with the same 10 cards. Are there any story cards in future expansion sets?

Thanks all,

Paul

First, sorry for the multiple post - something strange happened with my browser. The previous post actually had the answers but didn't show. And since there is no edit capability I couldn't fix it.

There is no "chain" as in Magic. Actions happen in alternating sequence between the players. Each action is resolved before the next action is taken. The only exception to this are DISRUPT cards, which can interfere with a stated Action.

Visiting Author can be returned to hand for the cost of 1 regardless of how he got there. All he had to do was "enter your discard pile this phase."

Ravager from the Deep will wound all of your characters at the same story as Ravager during the Commit step. If you send other characters to the same story as Ravager you probably want to make sure they have Invulnerability or Toughness (unless you have some trick planned where you want your characters in the discard pile).

Jack Brady is not a Forced Response, so the controller gets to decide if his ability will be triggered or not. Sometimes an opponent might play an Action that requires something to happen to a character in order for the second part of the action to occur. This might involve targeting a character. If you then trigger Jack's ability and return him to hand the action can't complete because the initial terms were not satisfied. Tricky to make this work, but not impossible.

Y'Golnac has the "if able" clause on his action. Characters can only commit during the controlling player's Commit step. Once that is done, they would not be able to commit, so Y'Golnac can't make them.

Secrets of Arkham has 10 new story cards in it. As of this week they become the official story cards for the tournament scene.

Welcome to the game and I hope you enjoy it!

And if my first post magically re-appears, sorry for the duplication. If it doesn't, well let's keep hoping that one day we get an edit function!
