Newbie questions

By RYANSWORLD64, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

yes hello well im new to rogue trader... i recently bought the gm set and the core book on amazon they are currently on there way but me and my friends need to know what are the dice we need since we like to jump in to things head on... like d20/d10/d5/d6/d4/d100/d74756769 if you can tell me how much i need for one player i should be able to do the math but there are gonna be four of us... i thank every one in advance and hope to be accepted into this community

You will need at least two 10 sided dice per player.

Those two dice should be of different colours* so you can distinguish between the tens and ones die on the d100 rolls. Some characters may find in convenient to have more so they can roll the entire damage for their weapon in one go (the MP Lascannon rolls 5d10 damage), but they will only need two to start with.

*It is preferable to have one as a percentile die.

wow thanks that seems simple enuf i know the perfect place to go to get like a pack of eight for five bucks... could you answer one more question thou? Are there any official minitures or should i buy generics or use 40k minis

There are no official minis, use whatever you feel like.

About the minitures; They aren't needed, but makes some combats much easier. A GM I talked with a while back encouraged players to bring their own minis and awarding those that were similar to the character. The award could be either a re-roll once pr session or a +5 bonus to something, like a skill.

Using a brightly coloured d10 for 0-90 is cool as the eyes see that one faster and you will know faster if you succeeded or not. Red unz go fasta! :P

Legos work fine for minis. They are cheap, someone probably has plenty of them already, and it is easy to visually represent severe injuries and equipment changes.

For ship to ship combsat you might look at he Battle Fleet Gothic miniature range. They should still be available at Games Workshop.

But basically, use whatever you like and have. We use a mixx of Star Wars and 40K miniatures in our games and they work well.

In addition to the obvious choice of GW 40K and Necromunda miniatures, Reaper Miniatures Chronoscope line has some good miniatures for Rogue Trader.

Also, Privateer Press has some great miniatures to use from their Solo and Warcaster line from Warmachine. They even have some futuristic Eldar-looking figures to use as Eldar Corsairs and as wraith guard/dreadnaught types. If interested, I'll provide web links in a subsequent post.

Reaper Miniatures figure - I'll use as Rogue Trader:

Privateer Press Miniature - suggested as a Rogue Trader:

Personally I find percentile dice distracting and prefer to use two different coloured proper d10's but then I'm old school and never even saw percentile dice when I was starting roleplaying.

Are you thinking percentile as in a 100 sided die, or as in 2 d10, one with an extra 0 after the numbers? I personaly perfer the later, otherwise I forget to declare which color is the 10's place.

Percentile is the one with the 0 after the numbers. Like you, I find it better than different coloured d10s because it is always clear which one is the tens die.

I've had a player with a d100 (the 100 sided die) and, because it was so round, it had two issues:

- The player had a hard time keeping it from rolling off the table.

- It took much longer to stop than a d10.

eh, to each their own.

I agree about the d100 though, they are nearly impossable to actualy use.

On the upside, you can always use them as a golf ball when you're not gaming.

I've done that before. Cheaper to just buy actual golf balls, though. Better flight characteristics, too.

White Dwarf once published a letter that showed 1,000 rolls on a d100 - it was a bell curve with low numbers of 1 and 100's and high numbers around the fifties because the sides are so small that they're not uniform or sharp enough.

As for keeping it straight in your head which colour is your tens and which your units - if you can't do that you probably need to drink less during your sessions ;)
