sage player card issue/ruling

By Kumara2, in Talisman

Can the sage look at any adventure card in the game? reason is that in the dungeon and highlands expansion the cards are called out as dungeon cards and as highland deck cards... does that mean that they are NOT adventure cards, so the Sage cannot look at them? or is the Sage REGION BASED, meaning that if the sage is in the same region ie in the dungeon or in the highlands he is ABLE to look at those decks specific to his area. Just curious as the Sage would be highly overpowered if he were to look at all three decks at any time. please advise.

Someone else might be able to cite and official answere... but...

Typically, any character with an ability for the Adventure deck can apply that same ability to other "encounter" decks from any expansion.

i guess that is what needs to be addressed. IS the adventure deck in the standard game the only adventure deck as the rules in the expansions specifically state dungeon deck and highlands deck...

i would like to think that the sage skill only applies to the region you are in, but im open to a ruling on this subject. what are your thoughts

Ah, it seems there are two issues at stake here:

  1. Can a character's ability to affect the Adventure deck be used to affect another encounter deck for a Realm (expansion boards) while it is in the specific Realm?
  2. Can the same character affect those other enounter decks while it is NOT in the specific deck's associated Realm?

Good questions... and you've already mentioned or implied the logical answers yourself.

  1. Yes.
  2. No.

Of course that's just my opinion.

Well it is quite logical for me.

My answer would be yes for both . When they invented the game, even if they knew about the expansions, they won't say for the SAGE : "You can know the first card of the adventure pack AND the donjon AND so on etc..."

Advenutre, Donjon, Highland or any other card are considered as on type of card under the name Adventure but each of them has to be picked up on different areas.

The rules are not so unclear about Abilities that refer to Adventure cards.

Check Dungeon Rulebook, page 10:

Special Abilities involving Adventure Cards in the Dungeon Region

Special abilities and effects that apply to Adventure Cards
behave differently when characters are in the Dungeon Region
rather than the Outer, Middle, or Inner Regions. When used
within the Dungeon Region, these special abilities and effects
apply to cards from the Dungeon deck instead.
For example, the Prophetess’s special ability states that whenever
she draws Adventure Cards, she may discard one card
of her choice and draw one more card to replace it. While the
Prophetess is in the Outer or Middle Region, her ability applies
to cards from the Adventure deck. However, while she is in the
Dungeon Region her ability applies to cards from the Dungeon
deck instead.

When the Sage is in the Dungeon, his ability applies to Dungeon card deck.

When he's in the Highlands, his ability applies to Highland card deck.

When he's on the main board, his ability applies to the Adventure Card deck.

The only occasion when this rule is crucial is when the Sage travels from main board to a corner Region or viceversa. When you roll the die and see your movement options, you may look at the deck of the Region you're in. If you choose to end movement in another Region, you have no chance to look at the top card until you're in that Region; this means that when you know the card is too late to avoid it.

Ah, interesting detail interpretation there for what happens during a movement between boards. And thanks for the details from the manual. But even so, for the last 20 years we've always rule that any ability for an encounter deck affects only the deck related to the current board the character is on. The Sage could not preview the Dungeon deck ... or all other encounter decks... while running around the main board. I think that was what one of Kumara's mates was trying to do.

I think the intention behind the rule is that the sage is knowledgeable enough to steer himself away from hazards to some extent and therefore, I can only se this ability as pertaining to his location and whatever deck is used there.

Otherwise, I feel this will again become one of those overlawyered rules that are taken to the extreme and interpreted in the extreme favor of that character. Oh the other hand, one could certainly infer that a sage is the "all-knowing" that could foresee events other places as well, but i think this is stretching his special abilities too far.

Bottom line: If you have such a powerful ability, you should be happy for that and taking it beyond is way to far.

That's how we interpret the rules here too, he can only see the top card of the region that he's in. It's never come up, but it could get messy when travelling between regions, but I think whatever region the Sage is physically in, that's what deck he can check. We use that rule of thumb for the Prophetess and any other character that has a similar ability.
