Use of shield with dual strike or while holding a gun.

By frankcastle1975, in WFRP Rules Questions

1) Dual strike requires 2 weapons...... can one of them be a buckler or round'kite shield?

2) Can a person use a gun and a sheild at the same time? So that they can shoot people and gain any DEF or SOAK from the sheild while in combat.

1) A shield is not considered a weapon, it is considered Armor. So, no.

2) Most shields, no, because a handgun is a two-handed weapon and a shield requires a hand to hold/use. I think you could probably use a buckler, though.

The reason I asked about using the sheild as a weapon for dual strike is that

1) bucklers have same stats as guantlets for CR/CR

2) round/kite sheilds have stats as improvised weapons

As for gun/sheild.... pistols only req one hand.

Bucklers and other shields are not listed in the equipment under Melee nor Ranged weapons. While they could be used as a sort of improvised weapon, they are not classified as weapons. So, technically they cannot be used. That said, as a GM I might allow a PC to use Dual Strike if they put forth a good argument and described what they were doing. However, I would probably put restrictions on the Defensive benefits of the shield, and/or ability to use the Block reaction.

A pistol is a pistol and not a gun, from a ranged weapons list perspective. There is no "gun" in the word "pistol", thus I was assuming you meant handguns, which are the two-handed rifle versions. And so, my answer specifically said that handguns are two-handed, and thus you cannot use a shield with them. Pistols are one-handed, thus you may indeed use a shield while wielding a pistol. Although, I might find it difficult to justify allowing a Reload action with both your hands full (I could see charging a second maneuver to be able to Reload with both hand full, ie the PC suffering a fatigue).

I would allow a Spiked Buckler to be used in a dual strike situation, as it can be used as a Gauntlet. I would probably add a black die though, unless your main weapon is something that works alongside the buckler well.

As far as the mention above of Handguns and using a buckler, the buckler would interfere with the reloading of the weapon. Though I might allow you to fire with one on, reloading would take an extra maneouvre... entirely becase I recall issues when I used to play AD&D where everyone made characters with bucklers on each hand while holding their weaponry.
