Deathwatch At GenCon?

Inquisitor Omandi looked at the assembled team before him and thought for a moment. Finally, he nodded and locked eyes with the one chosen for this duty.

" Brother Octavius, we are in need of someone to perform a mission most dire."

Octavius' shoulders squared, " My lord? "

" Report to mess barrack 13-A for tuber scrubbing duty. This is punishment for your 'accidental' discharge of your bolter in the munitions depot, causing the premature detonation of more than one-hundred 'Earthshaker" shells for the 322nd Maccabian Artillery Battalion. This punishment has already been approved by your Sergeant. Step lively, and double time, MARINE !"

The moral of the story, even a marine can get stuck on KP. happy.gif

I admit, I laughed my arse off lengua.gif Very nice!

But yea, that's a perfect example of how to twist a mission any soldier/diplomat could do and make it into something for the Deathwatch to do happy.gif .

Let's be honest though - Deathwatch don't only go after Xenos now . They used to, but like all things with GW, the fluff is arbitrary and can be changed and re-written as needed for whatever products they wish to make. Deathwatch can't just be about killing aliens - they have to be able to do other things otherwise the RPG would have a small scope - so now they have mandates to go after everything, rather than just being the Ordo Xenos Chamber Militant.

BYE

Well... no, not really. It's the same as Sisters of Battle. If xenos came along, the SoBs wouldn't go "sorry, not our job. We'll just wait for the heretics to turn up, thanks", they'd just run in and burn the Xenos. Same applies to the Deathwatch. Typically they tend to go after aliens, but if there's a distress signal nearby saying that Chaos Marines are attacking, and they are the only ones to be able to get there in time to help, they wouldn't just ignore it, unless they had a **** good reason to.

Also, they're not technically the Chapter Militant. I mean, they are strongly associated with the Ordo Xenos, obviously, but they aren't beholden to them. The Inquisition and the Deathwatch are equal partners in this.

Of course they would. I know that. But that's not the point I was making, and you know that. serio.gif

What I was saying is that the Deathwatch were the Chamber Militant of the Ordo Xenos in all previously printed material, but have obviously had their scope increased for the purposes of the Deathwatch game. The point, if you'd bothered to not just read my post but actually comprehend it, is that 40K's fluff is arbitrary and can be re-written and changed at a whim, to suit whatever need they have at the time. It's why the Sisters of Battle went from being their own army/part of the Ecclesiarchy to a Chamber Militant between 2nd and 3rd Ed, and will likely swap back again by the time Codex: Sisters of Battle hits the shelves.

So, as I said now Deathwatch go after everyone, because the game demands greater freedom in what the Deathwatch can be called upon to do on a regular basis. Yes, they'll fight Heretics and Daemons like everyone else, but that's not what they were intended for or, at least, not intended for until now .

Wow, I have to say that this part is incredibly rude! (and not, may I add, in a sexual way :P ).

It was, especially since I wasn't disagreeing with him, and merely pointed out how the Deathwatch game explains the Deathwatch getting involved with non-Xenos, which in no way changes the fluff.

Well now I weep.....

The person I entrusted with $200 of my money to secure a couple items at GenCon, totally ignored my warning about selling out.

By the time they got their happy arse around to waiting at the FFG booth, sold out.

While I am slightly saddened for you concerning this turn of events, I am also somewhat selfishly smug in knowing that I have one more companion on the hellishly (that's a -60 to our rolls) frustrating wait for the stores to start getting copies in. I am sorry that I cannot be more empathetic to your plight.

-=Brother Praetus=-

Oo, Praetus, you rotten bugger! gran_risa.gif

I have to say the wait is going to be painful, especially as another poster mentioned that Leisure Games are expecting their copies by early to mid September! *cries*

The problem I have is that, although I've been waiting for an RPG just like Deathwatch for the past 20 years, I feel that the demo adventure Final Sanction isn't winning my players over as well as I'd hoped. I therefore need the book to show them that there's more to it than just the demo. sad.gif

I feel my dream slowly slipping away and my players are the worst to try and win back around once they've made up their minds they don't like a game... llorando.gif

It could be worse, man. One of the groups I play in is basicly held hostage by one of the two female players. We cannot play anything unless she wants to, otherwise we lose her and her boyfriend. And it's starting to really p*ss me off since her primary excuse has either been she "doesn't want to learn a new game system right now," or she "doesn't want to play a game with an established story." So, no Star Wars for us, since the eras have "established stories" to them. No Dark Heresy or Legend of the Five Rings because she doesn't know the systems. But she hopped on a chance to play a Dresden Files game, which is both a new game system with an established story behind it.

I dislike people who cannot simply be honest with themselves and/or others on what motivates them.

-=Brother Praetus=-

That sucks sad.gif

May I ask how many players you have? Would the lady in question and her boyfriend's absence totally screw things up?

My problem is I only have two players, one of which is my cousin of 35 years who I consider one of my best mates and the other a good friend of 15 years+. I don't really have access to other players, nor do I feel comfortable playing with people I don't really know, so if one of my 2 players ain't happy, a game gets pushed aside.

Kinda sucks balls but what can you do, huh? And yet as I'm permanently the GM in our games (and Christ do I need a break from it!) I've even put my feelings aside and ran games they like even though I don't. Funny how sacrifice isn't a two-way street serio.gif

If it is any consolation the FFG guys said publicly at Gen Con that they actually think DW will be shipping very, very soon. So I don't think that mid-Sept. date is accurate. Well.. maybe accurate if you're ordering from Amazon. :-)

What is it that isn't appealing to them, out of interest? I'm asking because I'm wondering whether they are similar to my own misgivings (and misgivings love company!).

Glad that there is some love going out to the Dresden Files RPG , even if not exactly in the best of circumstances.

Dude - you can't let your whole group be held hostage by one person "Sorry to hear that, we will miss the two of you, but I think we can probably replace you" buh-bye

I agree with the above posting. However, it is hard to get a group going I have found. Tell the bf to be a man and put his foot down now before she gets this way about more important life issues.

He does put his foot down on things he considers important. As annoying as the circumstance is, it is kind of funny in a way. He's the one running the current game, and they fight and argue about it. This doesn't happen nearly as much when others have run games.

*shrug*

It is what it is. I'm generally tolerant and thick skinned with long time friends; which the whole group is, so I'll put up with it a while longer; see if people change their tunes at some point.

But, back on topic:

Deathwatch hopefully shipping soon is an awesome update Aethel, I do hope to be getting it sooner, rather then later.

@Kage2020:

Well, my cousin will play anything cos he's so laid back. At the end of the day he's there to have a laugh and a bit of a break from the kids once a fortnight.

But so far the other guy is complaining that he can't see how the marines are very varied. He likes his characters to be completely different to the other guy. Hell, if they both role the same result on one of the Dark Heresy Char Gen tables, he re-rolls! LOL! He's complaining that they're both marines which is dull.

I've tried explaining that being a marine is like being an acolyte or being an explorer. You still get a "race" (read Chapter) and "class" (read Speciality) and then there's all the skills/talents tables to choose from along with Chapter specific rules and demeanours.

I just need him to wait a while longer and give it a chance rather than write it off so early without all the details, but he can be notoriously hard to convince once his mind is made up sad.gif

What can ya do, eh?

Ah, I can see that. He just has the same problem as many other people did and that we're given to understand is moderated by the final publication. Thanks for answering, though, and not taking it is a subverted form of criticism against the game! Good luck getting your player in on the game. gran_risa.gif

Good to hear, Cailieg. happy.gif I'm actually quite the patient hunter, to use a Tau-ism. My only concern is unexpected expenses cropping up and doing me away financially. I've missed out on a lotof things I've wanted in the past due to such.

But, glad your friend managed to pull off the proverbial "Christmas Miracle" for you at GenCon. aplauso.gif Enjoy.
