Dwarven Beginner Deck

By SCOTTISH_POWER, in Warhammer Invasion Deck Building

Hi @ll,

I haven't played a single game yet, but I have been invited by two friends to join them playing the game.

After purchasing some cards, this is my first deckbuilding attempt (no tournament, just playing for fun):

2 x Defender of the Hold

2 x Hammerer of Karak Azul

2 x Troll Slayers

1 x Durgnar the Bold

1 x King Kazador

1 x Dwarf Cannon Crew

1 x Dwarf Masons

2 x Mountain Brigade

2 x Keystone Forge

1 x Organ Gun

1 x Master Rune of Dismay

2 x A Glorious Death

1 x Burying the Grudge

1 x Stubborn Refusal

2 x Striking the Grudge

1 x Wake the Mountain

1 x Master Rune of Valaya

2 x Dwarf Miner

2 x Gromril Armour

2 x Mountain Legion

1 x Empty the Hold

1 x Reclaim the Hold

2 x Dragonslayer

1 x Great Book of Grudges

2 x Flame Cannon

2 x Slayers of Karak Kadrin

1 x Mountain Barracks

2 x Contested Stronghold

2 x Armoury

2 x Ancient Warstone

2 x Innovation

2 x Boar Attack

What are your thoughts?

Thanks!

What cards do you have? Seems like the core set, Assault on Ulthuan and a BP or two ? Knowing that would help in terms of figuring out the best dwarf deck for you.

Here are the cards in your deck that are not very good and you will want to replace immediately (play for a while and you'll see what I mean):

  • Organ Gun
  • A Glorious Death
  • Burying the Grudge
  • Stubborn Refusal
  • Gromril Armour
  • Reclaim the Hold
  • Flame Cannon
  • Ancient Waystone
  • Boar Attack

As a general rule of thumb for a beginner, attachments and quests that gain counters are not very good. That's not always the case - the Book of Grudges is solid, for example - but generally attachments just give your opponent an opportunity to gain card advantage by killing 2 of your cards for their 1.

You also generally want to play 50 cards in your deck - I'm too lazy to count up all your 1x to figure out if you are already.

Oh, I forgot one more important thing.

There aren't really any decks that don't benefit from starting with the "core 9" cards - 3x Innovation, 3x Warpstone Excavation and 3x Contested Village - before you add anything else. Since you have Assault on Ulthuan and a Core Set, I know you have those cards.

Firstly many thanks for your serious comments, I will include the "big 9" into the deck.

I can offer cards of the Core set and the first expansion, but actually only dwarf faction and neutral (we have split the boxes) as well as the zealot, warstone chronicles and arcane battle packs (full amount of cards).

Yes, I am planning to have 50 cars (40 faction, 10 neutral) in the deck.

Again thanks for your help!

I should point out that you don't need to have 10 neutrals in the deck - that's not a deck construction rule, just for when you are learning to play.

So do you have 1 of each of those expansions, or a full playset?

Fine, didn't know about the neutrals, thanks.

To clarify this: I have all cards of the dwarven faction from the core set and the 1st expansion and all neutral cards of the same two sets. Additional I have purchased the zealot, warcraft and arcane battle packs (full).

Alright. I'm assuming you mean you have 1 of each of those sets.

Given that, a slight tweak on the single set dwarf list I posted a while ago should be pretty much what you want.

3 Warpstone Excavation
3 Contested Village
2 Helblaster Volley Gun
1 Great Book of Grudges
1 Dwarf/Empire Alliance
3 Keystone Forge
1 Mountain Barracks
1 Armory
15

3 Defender of the Hold
3 Mountain Legion
1 Dwarf Cannon Crew
2 Dwarf Miner
2 Hammerer of Karak Azul
2 Slayers of Karak Kadrin
1 Durgnar the Bold
2 Dwarf Ranger
3 Troll Slayers
1 Zealot Hunter
1 Dragonslayer
3 Longbeards
2 Mountain Brigade
1 Ironbreakers of Ankhor
27

3 Innovation
2 Lure Them Out
1 Demolition!
1 Burn it Down
1 Master Rune of Valaya
8

The best way to improve this list would be to play lots of games. WH:I has a fair amount of skill testing decisions. Once you have played a whole bunch, if you want to invest more $ in the game, I'd probably pick up the Burning of Derrickburg BP. Mining Tunnels is very strong.

Thanks again, you have been very helpful :-).
