GenCon and Rogue Trader

By Troy813, in Rogue Trader

I saw only one Rogue Trader session on the Gencon Schedule (and it is sold out already).

What's up with that?

You guys gonna put up any more?

I would really like to play a game while Im there.

T

PS. any cool swag at your booth?

I'm under the impression that games at Gencon have to be organised in advance, so if there is only one game, and it's sold out now, you're probably out of luck (in regards to games run by the devs or other booth helpers). There might be some people who run DH/RT/DW ad-hoc though, there usually are.

Ok

I'll keep my eyes open.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are unofficial games being played. I know for a fact, Jay Little (FFG WFRP designer) said he was "planning" on having some open games of WFRP at GenCon, for example. It wouldn't be unusual for Ross & folks to do something similar with RT.

I know I'll be there, and I'll be ready to run something.

There are a few games of Rogue Trader (listed below), but alas they are all sold out. My suggestion is to find out where they are (use the RPG code in the GenCon Rubi system) and hope for the best. Many times there will be open spots for a game because someone who pre-reg'd doesn't show up. I'll be running Blood on the Scales Thursday night, and I'll be playing in The Quest on Saturday night. I hope to see you around!

Oh, and ask around the FFG booth and try the open gaming area in the Hyatt for a chance to play.

Blood on the Scales
Thu 8:00 pm - Fri midnight (RPG1007937) 0/8

Quest, The
Fri 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm (RPG1009937) 0/6
Sat 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm (RPG1009940) 0/6

So how does Rogue Trader differ?
Fri 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm (RPG1009165) 0/6

I'm extremely disappointed that FFG doesn't seem to take Gen Con a little more seriously as far as having organized games and events. Sure they run their booth, but their gaming presence leaves a lot to be desired.

They don't run a lot of after hours RPGs, but they do have a crazy amount of other gaming they run. Lots of card tournaments and boardgame stuff. Who would you want to run the games? I know I'd like to have the designers do it, but they work a full shift at the booth (6 to 8 hours) and then would have to run another 4 hour game on top of that every night. That would, however, only make four DH, RT and DW games but would require them to each work a 48 hour week in just 4 days!

That's a total of 16 to 24 players for each game system. That's not a lot frankly. What could also work is for sites like DarkReign organize the community to put on some games. I'm willing to be though that when they have time the dev's will throw some games.

Flaw in that is that a fairly large proportion of Dark Reign is in Europe, getting close to 60% or so, so not a lot of us are going to Gencon, or have ever been to Gencon, which kinda makes it hard for us to organise games.

Most Events at conventions are run by fans, not by the game companies themselves. As far as I understand (which could be wrong), FFG is running demos at their booths throughout the day ... which aren't listed as "Events" in the catalog and are free to play. So, I wouldn't chastise FFG for not having games in the official Events. That is a problem with not enough non-FFG GMs submitting to run Events. As far as I can tell, the FFG folks will already be busy running demo games at their booths.

They also, from what I gather, have an entire FFG game Hall dedicated to their games, where a lot of the FFG-game tournaments will be held. Sounds to me like FFG is taking GenCon fairly seriously. I mean, geez, they have 4 entire booths in the exhibit hall, one of which, according to the exhibit hall map, is pretty big. I think, overall, they've got more booth space than WoTC.

I went last year and attended all of the game dev. sessions. Even with a very early pre-reg. this year there were still no DH or RT games available. As someone pointed out, most of the RPG games are fan-run events; FFG had, in my opinion, the largest space on the floor last year and were demo'ing their board games and talking DH and RT to anyone who asked (Sorry few burning up a ton of your time Ross, but totally appreciated!) including even questions regarding the Games Workshop IP licensing, etc. Not to mention that FFG had an open game room for sign out board games that was opened all night (and then some, since the 3 guys running the room Thurs night let us stay more than an hour after everyone else left... sorry, we got lost in Descent and no one came to kick us out.)

Everyone person I met from FFG (about a dozen different people I can think of) was top-notch and every bit the gamer that we are. I can't wait for Wed to come and spend time with them again! Not idle praise, simply appreciation for people putting more than just time into their job.

I will be there on Thursday.

Looking forward to talking to you guys.

So anyone get a copy of Into the Storm ?

I got it today...so far, I'm VERY impressed. It's basically RT's version of DH's Inquisitor's Handbook...only better.

Is there any new Navigator mutations?

Mutations? No, not that I remember. There are new powers though.

I ran Rogue Trader at Gen Con and it was well received. I did hear from a few people that there weren't RT games. Also, even though my games were sold out I still had room for generics at the event time.

With Deathwatch available for Gen Con 2011, do you think that people would prefer to play DW or RT? I'm worried that if I run RT next year no one will play because they're looking for Deathwatch games.

I gave my players the choice of Dark Heresy, Rogue Trader and Deathwatch for the new campaign I'm starting next month... they picked Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader in preference to Deathwatch.

Different groups have different preferences, and each 40kRP game has a different tone and a different style. I can't see any of them falling out of favour because of a newer game, because Deathwatch is by definition something different to Rogue Trader's exploration and adventure or Dark Heresy's intrigue and investigation.

I'm betting Deathwatch will appeal more to younger players. I don't think I'll be doing much more than dipping into it myself.

Well, fair enough then. My RT game combined RT and DH. I was going for an Abnett Eisenhorn or Ravenor flair to things and it went very well. I would struggle with running a straight RT game at a convention because it really seems to lend itself to a campaign of play. I like the concept of building a dynasty and the long range goals accomplished to get there but that seems less suited to a one shot convention game.

My DW game will likely include DH PCs to continue the story arc that has been steadily building toward Marine involvement. I'm curious if I'll end up with a younger game group next year for DW. I never really considered that. The material will of course be more combat based but the story and plot will be just as solid. I'll keep you posted!

What is going on this year (2011)?

I want to get in some RT games... should I look for them just on the GenCon Event schedule.

Will RT games be run in the FFG gaming area in the Exhibit Hall?

Does anyone plan to run games.... on the down low?

I have been away from the game for a while, I would like to hop back in while in Gencon.

Well then ....

nothing?
