During an encounter, the Overlord normally earns 4 threat per turn (1 per hero). What happens if the Overlord kills one or more of the heroes? Is his treat per turn reduced accordingly, or does it always remain 4, no matter how many of the heroes remain?

It remains 4. It doesn't specify heroes "present". The dead heroes are still in the game, just not present at the encounter anymore.
