Answers to questions requested

By snakeeyes2, in Runewars

Played a couple games of Runewars again this week (hadn't played for awhile).

Had some questions come up and hopefully you can help me out with them:

1) For Captain of the Heroes League title, to get a dragon rune, does one hero have to have and discard 3 Reward cards or can 3 heroes discard 1 Reward card each?

The cards reads: "...you may discard 3 reward cards from any of your heroes to gain 1 dragon rune...".

2) Some of the Rewards say "During your turn". Does this mean that during any season/turn at any time during my turn I can use that hero's Reward?

For example, Ice Storm reads: "During your turn, you may discard this card to force your opponent to rout a number of figures in this area equal this hero's wisdom."

3) If the answer to #2 above is yes, then can you use the card during a battle? The Ice Storm reward card above is a good example of a card you may want to use in the middle of a battle.

Never mind. Found my answers to a "Cory's answers compiliation" file on Board Game Geek.

Okay, I actually didn't get all my answers. Got answers to #2 and #3 but still unclear on #1. Came up again in a game tonight. I'm on a Runewars roll!

Those three rewards don't have to be owned by the same hero. You can split up the "source" of these rewards.

Agreed; the three rewards can be owned by 3 heroes or 1 hero, and they don't even have to be in a stronghold.

I've considered a house rule, though, where they DO Have to be owned by one hero (or at least have the heroes in a stronghold); one of the few things that sometimes rubs me wrong in the game is when a player just suddenly grabs the Captain of the Heroes' League title and starts turning in random rewards all across the board. It's hard to prevent that. If you have to put them all on one hero, you risk someone coming along and fighting that hero. If you have to go to a stronghold, it does give other heroes a chance to stop them a little.

I'm not sure I'll actually USE that house rule, as I'm not sure if it bugs me enough for me to care that much.

I see your point - but I'm not sure if this is a balanced houserule for bigger maps. With a bad draw of quests, it will take a lot of logistics to bundle three rewards on one hero – very often, heroes don't have enough turns to do these logistics. All right, all right, I know: Then the player will have to take more Strategize actions, right.

But this houserule will take the importance away from this title card and it will fall far behind the Primarchs of the Wizard Council-title. The players will even battle more for this one title while the other ones won't be seen in the game for a long time.

I have seen game sessions in which other players had to spend insane amounts of influence on this card just to restrain another player from getting it – and these were really enthralling games.

True, there would be implications. But I haven't seen a map so big and spread out that getting heroes together for that would be more work than bringing a shard back home. But it could affect the dynamics of things, true.

However, i don't think anyone takes a Strategize action just to move heroes around; if you do that, you are probably wasting your action. Sure, move them with your units, but don't use it JUST for moving heroes.

In many games, the Captain card is the BEST card - the Primarch card is handy, yes, but it cannot directly give you runes; it can only make your bidding on runes more effective. The Captain card, with several heroes and lots of rewards, can net you 1 or 2 (or more!) runes DIRECTLY. It depends on the game, but as powerful as the Primarch card is, it isn't always the best option. Plus, the Captain card is handy if you have several non-matching heroes, to prevent the "Revealing Their True Nature" card from popping up at the wrong time and having your heroes desrt you.

Again, though, I'm not sure I'd ever use that house rule anyway, as I typically don't use house rules much at all.

Thank you for your answers.
