New Player with Questions

By MadCatDisease, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I just recently started playing Arkham Horror and have some gameplay questions I could not find the answers to in the forums or in the FAQ:

1. After an investigator exits a portal and returns to Arkham, during the Arkham Encounter phase he can attempt to close the portal. Does this take the place of drawing an encounter card or must he first draw and resolve an encounter card?

2. Must you attempt to evade a monster everytime you pass one or can you chose to stop and fight it? If you can chose to stop and fight, does it still automatically inflict damage to you before you can attack it?

That's all the questions I have right now, thanks!

Hi! And welcome to the Carnival ::smiling::

1. Gates substitute locations, so you may not have any encounter in a location with an open portal on. Closing / sealing gates is you Arkham encounter for that round, no encounter cards

2. Everytime you enter a street area / location where a monster lurks, you have to deal with them. The options are two: evade (and in this case, if you still have some movement points, your are allowed to move away from the monster) or fight. In case you evade successfully the monster, no damages of any type. In case you fail to evade the monster, the monster inflicts you its combat damage. If you survive, you can choose again to fight or flee (anyway, for this round you may not move further; so, even if you have some movement points left and pass the evade check at the second try, you have to stop there).
In case you choose to fight, then a) Horror check and - if you do not go insane - b) Combat check

Okay, just to make sure I am clear. If I enter a location with a monster and choose to fight rather than evade I first make a horror check and if do not go insane I then make a combat check. If I successfully kill the monster on the first attack, I do not take any damage, correct?

Yep, perfect!

I thought I would ask questions on this thread than open a new one.

My friends and I have completed a few games (lots of fun):

Some questions.

1) I have to make an evade check, my sneak is at 1. The modifier is -2, which puts me at a -1. Would I be able to use a clue token? Or would that just put me at 0 rolls? Would I have to use 2 clue tokens to put me at 1 roll?

2)A question on the spell Flesh Ward. When do I cast it? After I take damage or before I enter combat? Such as, can I make a combat check, miss, and then cast it to not take any Stamina damage?

3)If I have a rumor card in play and I draw another Mythos card (I know I discard the 2nd rumor), but do I draw another Mythos card as well?

4)If my terror track is at 10(I then update the doom token tracker) but next turn I draw a card that says increase the terror track by 1. Since I am maxed out at 10 do I again add another doom token?

5) I have a flying monster in the sky, it moves (per Mythos card) to my detective in the street. Next movement, I evade it. Does it go back into the sky or does it stay on the street at that point?

6)We are in a 4 player game, 1 detective gets devoured. Instead of getting another character, my friend quits. That now leaves us with 3 detectives. Do we now play board rules as a 3 player game(such as monster limit, gate limit, etc)?

Thanks for all the help,

Meant if I draw another rumor card on the next Mythos phase.

1) You never have fewer than 0 dice. In this case, one clue token would give you one die, as normal.

2) Anytime you're supposed to suffer some amount of stamina damage, you can cast Flesh Ward to prevent it all. So yes, you can cast it after failing a combat check. Note that with monsters like Nightgaunt or Dimensional Shambler, the spell will not save you (they do an effect instead of stamina damage).

3) You follow all the steps on the drawn Mythos card in order, as normal (open gate, spawn monster, add clue) except when it comes time to apply the Mythos text, since there is already a rumor in play, the card is instead discarded without any special effect.

Note that a similar thing happens when you replace one environment card with another: the environment in play is not discarded until you go to apply the special text of the new environment. This means that monsters spawned and moved by the drawn environment card may follow the modified movement of the environment in play.

4) You do not add a doom token when the terror level hits 10 (this was 1st edition); instead you add one each time the terror level would increase when it's already at 10 (the second edition updated rule).

5) As with any monster, it only moves when its symbol comes up. This means that it may remain in the street indefinitely.

6) This isn't official, but you could do one of two things:

  • Replace the investigator, who will be controlled by one of the remaining players
  • Adjust all the stuff to make it into a 3-investigator game. This may involve moving a monster to the Outskirts, so you'll have to agree what would be the most fair way to decide which one goes

Thank you for the help,

For question 3, I meant it a different way.

I have a rumor in play.

Next Mythos turn I pull another rumor.

I discard the rumor since I already have 1 in play. Do I keep pulling Mythos cards until I get a gate card?

Or move on to upkeep phase?

I guess what I am asking is do I get a freebee for that Mythos turn (no possibilities of a gate, doom toke, surge, etc). Or do I keep pulling cards until I get a gate?

The main point is that the "rumor" is only a part of a Mythos card. Generally speaking, a Mythos card consists of 4 parts:

1. A gate appears at (some cards have a double doomer, some a double terror increase, some are strange; anyway, the first step is to resolve what described in the lower left corner)

2. A clue appears at

3. Monster movements

4. Special text. This can be a rumor, an enviroment or a headline.

At the end of every turn, you draw a Mythos card (Phase 5). You resolve all the points from 1 to 3. Then, if the "new" card is a rumor AND you have already a rumor in play, then you discard the card, skipping only point 4

Off-topic post-scriptum: I'm going on holydays, and 99% I'll have no internet connection. In case, a joyful summer to everybody, see you in september :-)

Wah! ;.( We'll, miss you.

And I guess I'll be doing more Arkham "Tech Support" while you're gone... But that's not why you'll be missed :') Have a great vacation. Try to eat some squid or octopus while you're gone... Because if you don't, they might be waiting at your door when you return.

Ahhh,

Got it. I thought for some reason you had to follow all points, except if a rumor is already in play, then pick another card.

But if you have a rumor in play and pull another rumor, follow everything else.

Thank you and enjoy the vacation
