discarding items

By alex 2.1, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I thought about playing the Scenario: Knocking on the Gates from League 1. One of the special rules states, that you lose 1 sanity for every 2 tomes, spells and/or unique items you have during your upkeep. Some of the items aren't worth a sanity every upkeep, but is there a way to discard an item or do i have to wait till i'm reduced to 0 sanity or 0 stamina?

There are no easy ways of discarding unless the Kingsport board's Pawnshop is in play.

Say what? Can't you just throw **** away if you don't want it?

This is horror themed, you throw it into the river then you find it in your pocket later.

Right. Items can't be voluntarily dropped or discarded—only given to other investigators.

Hrm... Well, if madness and injury cards are in play, you could stock up one player with all the stuff you want to get rid of and then get him two madnesses and injuries and retire him.

Less trouble just to go insane, I should think. Reaching 0 sanity isn't so bad as long as whoever you give all the offending items to doesn't have any clues to lose (or a retainer, I guess)
