Creating your own Items

By honKYkat73, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

I have recently been playing Descent and have loved the game, but I noticed the shop cards are lacking some things items. I know there are additional item cards in the expansions. But is there a way, like the "create your own hero" thing that FF has here on their site, to make some? I mean is there some formula being used?

Also, is there anything wrong with modifying cards for game play? Both myself and a few friends believe some gold items just ruin the end of the game by killing the boss with two or 3 hits before it even gets to act. I would like to have people give me their advice on this.

Out there is somewhere in the forum a Card Editor where you can create your own stuff; additional the expasions bringing up really good items, you can search them in a wiki and copy them into the editor. Anyways here are some of my ideas:

There is no formula for creating items, but there is a program (Iam's card editor) that gives you a means of editing basically all card types. Items, monsters, heroes, etc. You have to use your own best judgement as far as balance goes, though.

What you describe as far as game play is not uncommon. Especially with the earlier level bosses. Usually if the heroes manage to get as far as the boss room, there's not much question that they'll kill him (gold weapons are known to make the heroes unstoppable in general.) If you want to remove or alter cards to make the game more fun, that is of course up to you and your group. As long as everyone at the table agrees, there's really no harm in changing things up. Keep in mind that everyone should agree though - the OL has no more authority than the Heroes when it comes to changing the rules of play.

I get the impression you're playing with just the base game. Keep in mind that the expansions will also provide you new OL cards and traps that can mix things up, too. So you'll want to remember those cards you took out as you may decide to put them back in once you start expanding the game.

This thread is more at home in the Homebrew section...

Anywaez, homebrew is ALWAYS encouraged in the world of Descent. The tile pieces and the highly customizable monster list etc, they were all created with the thought of recreation in mind. If u love homebrew and u made like 20+ great weapons that aren't overpowered or underpowered, ur reward is that u get to enjoy the game more thoroughly as opposed to someone else who only has the original game. There was even mention of the new Descent being an AC in the high heavens where strongholds and cities float atop clouds. What can I say? HOMEBREW!

Just use the same old rules from RtL and introduce a few new systems such as examples like: falling off the tiles from knockback etc = instant death. (but u still get a chance to roll a surge and manage to grab onto the ledge at the last moment and pull yourself back up and place ur character on the space adjacent to wherever u might have fallen off) When u get new systems in, u also get an excuse to create new skills like Gripper (melee), which allows u to roll twice for the chance to pull urself back if u get hit off the map. And of course flying creatures will automatically return to the adjacent space since they can fly.
