As the title says I am slightly confused about character advancement. On each character card is has a total of 10 "in class" advancements, and to my understanding if a person wants to complete the carrier they have to take those 10 advancements. However, in order to advance a stat from 5 to 6 it says you have to spend 6 career advancements to do so. Does this mean they only have to spend 4 more advancements to complete the class or did they mean XP? Hopefully someone can clear this up as I am still getting used to the system.
Slightly Confused on Character Advancement
To complete the career the player has to take 10 advancement within the career. This also means 10 xp. On the character sheet some of these advancements are listed as open advancements. There are 6 slots for these. These are used to take stat increases within the career. So if a character wants to go from 5 to 6 in a stat these 6 slots will all be filled up by this one advancement and the character then only needs to take the 4 specific advancements to complete the career. This being one Action Card, Talent, Skill or specialization and one Wound.
Yep, if you're advancing one of the career's Primary Characteristics then advances spent count as General Career Advances. If the stat isn't one of the career's Primary Characteristics then advances spent count as Non-Career Advances.
I'm still confused about career advancements.
For example, if my career shows 2 skills in the career sheet and I decide to take 1 skill as the "fixed advancement", does that mean I still get to buy 2 more skills to complete the career? Does it count toward that 2, but if I want to buy a 3rd skill, it's still okay since 1 count toward fixed advancement and 2 with open advancement? If not, what if I want to buy a 3rd skill advancement. It don't count against my career completion ?
What "open advancement" really means anyway? Could I buy ANY advancement up to 6 "open slots"?
I'm really confused, now.
The 4 specific General Career Advances must be spent on Action Card, Talent, Skill, and Wound. The 6 Open Career Advances must be spent on one of the ten advances described on the Career Sheet under 'Advances' (or characteristic upgrades).
You'll always have some choice and flexibility in these coz you're always choosing 6 from 10. (Unless you spend those career advances on characteristic upgrades instead.)
But does this mean I cannot buy more than 2 skill advances with my 6 open advances if my career advancements show 2 skills ? (3rd would be out-of-career advancement, even if the skill is on the career list?)
What if, on character creation, I buy the 4 skills, 2 specialisation line and my career shows 2 skill advances while the career has only 5 skill on it's list. I'm stuck, I can't ever buy 2 skill advances and never can complete the career?

That won't happen because there will always be a number of other advances you can buy (they're listed on the career sheet under advances). Failing that you can buy as many specialisations as you need, and you can always buy characteristic upgrades instead.

If your career advances shows 2 skills, then the most skill advances you can buy during that career will be 3. Those 2 as Open ones, and 1 listed as 'Skill Training or Speciality'
Edit: I guess you would have to purchase any others as out-of-career advances.
I think I get it now. Thanks for the quick answer!
