Hi
As I am prone to designing large scenarios, I wanted to ask everyone here how many copies of the base game boards and the map pack you have.
I have three copies of the base game and one map pack.
(and 4 copies of DotF and 3 copies of Normandy)

I own 1 of each of everything made so far.
I think the sweet spot for map size is 9 boards.
I have one have everything and 2 map packs. I agree 9 boards is the sweet spot.
Just one of each, I'm afraid. Do have multiple copies of memoir 44 and expansions and sometimes use tiles from that game for TOI: They're the same size and memoir is more complete as far as terrain is concerned.
Since it was map pack 1, I'm hoping there'll be more installments. Interested in more desert maps. Wouldn't know where to store more copies of the TOI basegame. (Got lots of other games as well...)
Kingtiger you forgot to tell Klaus what scenario size you like best.

The bigger the better!
for map sets i have one of each for scenario size 9 maps is a sweet spot but i think some 2 maps intro scenarios could be fun

Sorry, can'.t say. For me the quality of a scenario doesn't depend on the number of maps used. I've mostly played on 9 maps, but I remember some good 4 or 6 map scenarios as well. One day i suppose I'd even like to play on a massive map of 13 or 15 map boards. That way you'd have more room to manoeuver and to possibly avoid enemy fire.

You're right, ist doesn't. I only asked because I noticed that I tend to wirte rather large scenarios and wanted to know whether or not there are any players out there who can play them.
My favourite map size for published scenarios so far is 12 boards. But my own scenarios often get larger. I like the fact that with larger boards there are more manoeuvre options before the slugfest begins.
and manoeuvre options are fun because you can plan something and try to excute it.

True. I'm all for 12 board maps too. I just think 9 gives you the best combo of strategy and length of play time.
i suspect 9 is the sweet spot for most. i can play either large or small just depends on the mood mostly.

This is my philosophy as well.
I would expect to see the larger board configurations for Kursk battles (FotB).
In theory I would very much enjoy bigger battles, aka 2 on 2 in Designer Series.
However in practice, the bigger one takes too much time to finish...
well that's true but large scenarios are fun no matter how long they take

I have one ToI base game, one DotF, one Normandy and one Map pack.
As to the optimal map size of a normal scenario I would incline to use 8-9 map boards. Sometimes you need bigger space, so 12 map boards would come handy, but I think that less (used map boards) sometimes means more.
As for now I used maps bigger than 12 map boards only twice (one with 15 map boards and one with 16, but yet have to test those scenarios).
But I think that using a bigger map (i.e. more map boards is not so much matter of money for buying neccessary map boards/expansions), but rather a space problem (if you do not lay the map on a floor of course
). Usually using bigger maps should be associated with using more units (and so with a tendency for maybe a multiplayer scenario).
But in certain cases, like the one Klaus mentioned, and if you want to desigh that specific scenario more thoroughfully, bigger map is the right way. But using a bigger map and balancing it properly with number of engaged units and tuning its playability is in this case more difficult that in case with 9-12 map boards scenarios.
So I´m rather inclined to use 9-12 map boards and rather use greater map variety with Map pack map boards or additional map boards (from a given expansion), but in some special cases I would not hesitate to use bigger maps (though usually I would be satisfied with up 16 map boards
)
making the scenarios fun is always the challenge whether 2 boards or 20 boards. what a big map also allows for is 4 player options and even multi-nation options

I have one base set along with one each of the two expansions and the map pack. Due to time constraints, I play small, quick play scenarios.
Talking of size, I have just created my largest scenario to date, it's called "A Bridge to Far" and contains 24 boards.
You can't quite see all the boards on the photo, unfortunately.
looks like fun.

That long board looks good!
That looks really fun; hopefully ill have the time to play one that epic some time. And yes the long board looks perfect for operation market garden.
