Expansion 2 for TI3?

By Doc Belmont, in Twilight Imperium 3rd Edition

I've noticed a trend lately for FFG to place banners for the games they are about to expand or release on the front page. Now, Twilight Imperium is one of those banners. Anyone know if they have plans to do a second expansion?

To be honest, I think it's been too many years since anything new came out for TI3, so I wouldn't expect a new expansion after so much time. Not that I would mind being proven wrong, mind you. =D

It could also be some new game set in the TI universe, which I also wouldn't mind. Or it might, just might, be an indication that the much desired reprinting schedule is finally coming to pass.

Or it might be that the front page somehow polls forum activity to decide what banners to show. When new expansions are coming the related forums do tend to light up, so the causal relationship you suggest might actually be the reverse. The TI3 forum has had a jump in activity lately.

I suppose you're right. I was just going off of the two recent instances with Runebound and "Mists of Zanaga" and Arkham Horror with "Lurker on the Threshold."

However, rumor had it that FFG was going to be making a re-make of the old "Dune" game, but rethemed into the Twilight Imperium universe (partly due to licensing issues with the Dune copyright owners). It's possible, I guess, that the TI3 stuff being on the ads may be to get people excited about the TI3 universe again, with the release of this new game on the horizon?

(I don't know if that remake is even still active, but I suppose it's a possibility).

I guess I'd have to see such a thing in play to know if it was worth my money or not.

Having played the old Dune game, it's hard to imagine the "same game" with a different theme. That game was just so entirely designed to emulate the Dune story that it seems impossible for me to imagine it set anywhere else. I mean, you could make another game with the traitor mechanic they used, or with the items and such not. You could even make a new fluff reason for random resource drops appearing all over the map instead of "spice blows." To me it just seems like it wouldn't be the same game though. I dunno, maybe I'm just being too narrow minded on this one. It would either end up looking like a cheap Dune universe knock off (which would cheapen the brand name they were using) or it would just be... somehow wrong... otherwise.

Yeah, it's hard to say. Maybe that's part of why it's disappeared from view, who knows. As someone who knows nothing about the Dune universe though, or the Dune game, I don't think the retheming would have put me off :) So it may just depend on perspective. Sure, Dune fans may not have bought into it, but there may have been a mass of others who would buy it without qualms because they don't have the attachment to Dune's "feel" :)

I would love to see TI4 or TI3 revised edition with all the ugly fudged up rules fixed.

The problem is, which rules need to be "fixed" is highly subjective. I wouldn't pay just to have an updated set of rules. If a TI4 came out, it would have to be significantly different enough from TI3 to warrant being purchased as a new game, like TI2 was with TI3. When Runebound, 2nd Ed came out, they were smart and allowed players to trade up, because they were so similar, but different enough that they weren't "compatible" either.

I concur. I'd love to see an updated and revised TI3 rulebook, but I wouldn't pay money for it. If they put it up on the support page for free download though, I'd be forever grateful.

TI4 would be interesting to see, but I again agree with Sigma that it would have to be substantially different from TI3 to be worth the $100 price tag (I'm guessing it would clock in around there since that's what epic boxes seem to be going for these days.) Compiling the base and expansion into one box would not be sufficient to make me buy a new edition, even with updated card text, etc. There are some ideas from Runewars I wouldn't mind seeing reverse engineered into TI, but again probably not enough to justify a whole new edition.

I think TI3 is showing up on the front page because the Shattered Empire expansion will be available again soon.

I'm new here but I've played and loved TI3 for years. Out of curiosity, which bits of the rules are considered by you (or the wider community) to require fixing? I'm just interested to see if other people's experiences chime in with ours.

Oh, and I should probably add that I would love to see a 2nd expansion too but I suspect that FFG has too many other fish to fry at the moment, and if it was going to happen it would have happened a few years back. preocupado.gif

The rules regarding how to resolve "pre-combat" abilities are terrible.

The official rules for priority in resolving action cards are also really bad.

All the F.A.Q. rulings over the years have been pretty random too, very inconsistent.

Why, what's wrong with them?

They are kind of wonky, just because the official way is kind of tedious, but I like the fact that lower inititiave has the advantage in those very few situations that it matters :)

There have been a few oddballs, but almost every FAQ ruling I can recall has been pretty consistent with other rulings, and some that weren't were changed so that they were.

These situations seem more like personal taste than anything else - very subjective :) In any case, I still don't think those minor issues is worth releasing a whole new edition for, even if they were changed - an online "updated" rulebook would be plenty sufficient.

Yeah I would love to see a comprehensive/living rulebook system instead of the F.A.Q. system.

That would honestly work for me, printing a new edition would just be awesome for more content and to increase the player base and interest.

I would love them to reprint this great game and expansion.... Banners equaling reprint status sounds more logical.
