New to RPG games.....

By letumnefas, in Anima: Beyond Fantasy RPG

Hello Everyone,

I will put this up front and initially admit that I, and the majority of people I play games with haven't made the leap into RPG board games yet. The majority of games we've played so far have been games similar to Ticket to Ride, Last Night on Earth, Zombie Nation, Pillars of the Earth, Arkham Horror to name a few. However, we are interested in giving RPG games a go and see how we fare with them! Each of us enjoy Anime anyways so this game immediately caught our attention.

I have been looking around at this game and while it seems cool, I haven't seem too many images or the game itself or what it all entails. What would be needed in order for a group of four to get a game of this off the ground? I've seen multiple things from books to manga, to figurines, and even cards; but I haven't seen a list of "this is what's needed!" Can anyone guide me to something like this? If this game comes in packs can someone be kind enough to suggest some good initial packs or something equivalent to a starter sets.

Also, since we're all pretty fresh to RPG board games in general, do you guys/gals think this game would be a leap too far into the RPG board game realm? Should we start with a simpler game to get our feet wet? If so, can you please provide some suggestions.

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance that is able to be provided!!!

All you "need" to play the game is the core book (runs about $60 US) and some ten sided dice (which you can get at any gaming store, and most hobby/comic shops) plus paper and pencils, stuff like that. I would recomend whiteboard to keep track of initiatie and spacing for combat, but you don't need it.

If this is your first game, i would suggest looking at D&D 4E (much eaiser, especially if your coming from board games / video games) or something super rules lite like Teenagers from Outerspace or Big Eyes, Small Mouth (both anime inspired, both out of print unfortunetly) would be better. Anima is a great game, but its not entry level. Still thats only one man's opinion

While I agree with the general concept that Anima Beyond Fantasy is not really something I'd recommend as a first RPG, if you can handle the rules of Arkham Horror, you can probably handle the rules of Anima Beyond Fantasy just fine.

The rules seem intimidating at first, but read carefully and ask at forums and it won't be any problems. Be sure to read everything several times, and read everything. Some rules are hard to understand if you don't get the whole picture. The information in the book is scattered all over, so it's worth reading most of it at least twice before trying to explain to the players :)

And the character sheets are pretty f*cked up, too. A lot of things just aren't there, and forget words like "logical" and "structured" when using them... There are some customized sheets, though, that I find pretty good.
