Thinking of purchasing the rpg Anime.

By mrbearclawdius, in Anima: Beyond Fantasy RPG

Was wondering about what sort of game it is and what it plays like? I like the art work and the basic premise but would like a little more info please?

Well first off, Anima uses percentile dice for almost everything. Some things seem to have been lost in translation but overall it seems like a fun, solid game.

You roll 10-sided dice to generate your attributes and use a set amount of points to buy your skills and abilities.

The game has a decent selection of magic schools and spells, as well as the ability to summon and control creatures. There's also psionics, martial arts and the use of Ki abilities.

For the most part everyone's human, although you can play a human who was stillborn and possessed by the spirit of a long dead race. There are optional rules for building other races though, including the standard fantasy races.

And combat is generally resolved by one person rolling his attack, the other rolling his defense, and comparing numbers. If the attacker wins by enough, he does damage. If the defender wins, he has an opportunity to counterattack. If he wins the roll by enough he gets a bonus on the counterattack.

There is a fair amount of math involved in gameplay though.

It's very rules heavy but very flexible and while it can seem unbalanced it's actually extremely balanced and just seems unbalanced because of the power level. It essentially has 4 magic systems, Magic, summoning, Ki and psionics. And non-combat characters have lots of skills to specialize in as well. If you've read a manga chances are you can convert the character in it to this system. Combat tends to be deadly, kind of like dark heresy actually, but of course that depends largely on who's in charge. Here's another site to read stuff at.

Also it would help us to answer your question of what the system is like if you tell us what systems you've played before. That way we can tell you how this system is different, the same etc.

If you've played RoleMaster, most of the combat and skill ussage, as well as armor system, is very very similar. While Magic/Psi/Ki systems are superficialy different, they use the same rolling mechanic and thus are not too hard to learn. If you don't like charts, you won't like Anima, but its not a bad game

The base mechanic uses a d100, not percentile dice. it's not a percentile system.

It's a fairly complex and involved game. The translation also suffers in places, but if you are patient and don't mind the crunch it's a very diverse game with a great deal of options and flavor to work with.

The overall feel is meant to be similar to fantasy anime, hence the title.
