2nd Edition Book ideas/Throwing out old System (to merge both of these threads into one on these new boards)

By Peacekeeper_b, in Dark Heresy

I was just trying to find out what happened to your website. I went there today and it was gone... very bummed.

Master Edition or Peacekeeper_B Edition would be a better term for what i looking for.

What I list is the following.

1. More background, including ideas and information to make the players more involved in a galactic scale if need be.

2. Compile the errata, including Vehicle Apocrypha and other free PDFs (heck, through Shattered Hope in as the first 16 pages for a quick "how to play" and starting adventure)

3. Compile all careers and origins in one book.

4. Fix typos and errors.

5. Give role play information for the various character types, especially Clerics, Tech Priests and Psykers.

6. (from last list) more art to show as well as describe the environment and setting.

What would you cut to fit this stuff in?

Cut? Why cut it, I really want a 1200 page book the current one is far too flimsy for my liking gui%C3%B1o.gif

In all serious though. I (and I know I appear to be one of a few) really like DH the way it is. I like the idea of playing expendable inquisitorial acolytes. I like the Calxis "backwater" as mentioned earlier it gives FFG free reign on what they would like to do, but more importantly it gives you the GM's and players the freedom to make it your own little place in the Imperium. If it was set elsewhere, say Ultramar you would be beset by players saying, you can't do that or are but the Tyranids ate that moon we're about to look at or it wouldn't feel "real", the players actions would have less meaning as they would know that this is just a made up story in the 40k universe. Whereas, playing in the Calixis sector gives my plays a sense of accomplishment that they really did save the Malfian Sub sector as there is no codex/novel/white dwarf acticle to say otherwise!

I could be wrong but I think the major problem that many people have with DH (they might not realise it though gui%C3%B1o.gif) is that everyone was soooo excited about the idea of a 40k rpg. Everyone was conjuring up the image of the rpg they were waiting for. "I really want X!" "I hope it has rules for Y!" "SPEEESHH MAHREEENS!!! WOOOOO!!" They kept waiting and waiting and got more and more excited about what they hoped it would be that when the final (awesome) product was out they could only focus on what it wasn't, that this was "broken", "it doesn't fit into the way I saw it working" "Bolters? WTF!" "It doesn't have X" "What!? No rules for Y!!? How dare they!?" "NO SPEEESH MAHREENS!? NOOOOO!!"

But don't get me wrong I would really like a reprint that includes the latest errata (and anything that was possibly missed) I just don't think it needs the overhaul that others believe it does. I could be wrong, but it seems to be working fine for our games.

My friend I couldnt have worded it better myself. I second that.

Gentlemen, bear in mind that the game is fairly fresh, it hasnt even been a year since Black Industries dropped the line and FFG came and took over. And over the course of this year, not only did they re-release the core rule book, the IHB, and PTU; but added new stuff to the GM's kit (which was just a screen before hand), Released DoTDG, they're about to release CA, and who knows what they have in the works.

The system has been working fine for me, the only problem with the rule book that is even worth mentioning is the lack of in-depth analysis on the certain carreer paths, as well as tips on how your character should act. (Tech-priests should be shy and snidy, clerics should be charismatic, ect ect. I believe that was mentioned.) The Carreer ranks also irk me a tad (as how can a guardsmen go from a conscript to lieutenate to commander by serving the inquisition, and on second thought, why would the inquisition recruit a battle-virgin conscript).

Point being, the best way to solve these MINOR problems isnt Dark Heresy Second Edition, but more altering them in your campaigns. New house rule that we've got is there is no more rank names, just ranks 1,2,3,4,ect... These problems are easily fixed.

To hell with a second edition, release CA, then get to work on a book with even more NEW stuff. gui%C3%B1o.gif

Its been removed.

I find the whole career system to be terminally silly. But I seriously doubt it will be done away with.

I'd love to see more art with no guns in it. trying to explain what a hive looks like was actually very difficult using just the DH material, for example. Also stuff like ordinary living quarter for civilians, a market scene, a spaceport. Simple stuff, but it really helps GMs and players.

More background too, and more super-short stories scattered through the book. Also, the structure of the imperium diagram on page 248, while pretty, is wrong. It doesn't have the Adeptus Terra in it for starters and in no way shows the seperation of the Ad Mech, Inquisition and Space marines from the greater body of the imperium.

I would very much like to see something like a Calixis Sector sourcebook. Detailing life, social structure, cultural differences, and perhaps giving one a few solid directional hints in regards to roleplaying and frame of mind within the setting. Expanded backgrounds I beleive would be very helpful in this regard as well. One thing that has always struck me, and fellow players, as odd is that the core book lists a handful of backgrounds, with very little variation on a theme. Flavor, if you will. This is somewhat mitigated with the Inquisitor's Handbook and it's additional backgrounds. But I still feel that the meat of the setting is profoundly lacking in options. Like having steak with only salt and pepper. Only you can choose one, salt or pepper. Not both. For example, the most frustrating of backgrounds, Imperial World. Only if you reference the map, not one can be readily defined as a sterotypical example. I mean, they're all Imperial worlds. Bit perhaps options should be accounted for that would make a more organic train of logic following the map. Frontier world, Frontier background. So on and so forth. I know that this thread is in regards to another printing. I think the core book, along with the errata and supplements, is in no dire need of another installment. Nor for that matter, is my pocketbook.

On a different subject, if anyone would like to correspond more in regards to DH. Let me know. And I'll get back to you. As soon as I find out how.

Hmm... Defenitely need a book for vehicles as well. And I empatically agree with the art. I would very much appreciate more and varied examples of iconic career characters. And then beyond that, atypical career characters. Both male and female. Though I must admit I have a soft spot for the femme fatale. Or if someone could direct me to the vehicle information? I've seen tell of it, but I cannot seem to find it on my own. And, unless I'm mistaken, it is not on the support page for DH.

I'm sorry. I forgot to include the addition of Origins as well in my remarks upon backgrounds. This perhaps may clear up some confusion. I meant to say that both Origins and Backgrounds would benefit greatly from more exposition.

Dear Fantasy Flight,

Dark Heresy has failed to live up to my unrealistic and vague ideals of what a mind-blowing hyper detailed 40k roleplaying experience would be. Please thow out all your work up to this point and make a completely new game with the following (minimum) features:

- That FUDGE dice system with the plus & minus crap I don't know how it works but it looks really flexible.

- Ranks up to 99 possibly allowing me to become a High Lord of Terra

- Detailed analysis of every aspect of imperial life. What brand of shoes do they wear? Top 40 songs this month? Can they see why kids love the taste of Cinnamon Toast Crunch? I cannot roleplay properly until I have answers!

- 500 page character creation system with over 50 random tables allowing me to detail every event in my life with tangeable effects on my PC, like that time my douchebag brother broke my Limited Edition Sebastian Thor Action Figure that should like raise my Fate Points or something.

- The ability to cast unlimited psychic powers every turn, Psykers are worthless now!

- Death Knight career

Thanks in advance.

^^ epic win

Maybe it's just me but I'm perfectly happy with the cor books as it is and although a 1.5 edition with errata would be nice I fail to see why the background section would have to be bigger. Most gamers that pick up DH already know the 40K setting and those that do not know usually have somebody in their group that does and is able to explain it. If you wanted to include all the background of the setting it would become as large as the Hindu Vedas....
Maybe a seperate players' guide with background articles would be more appropiate?
