Thermal Imaging and psionic powers

By Gunhead, in Dark Heresy House Rules

I'd like an official ruling on the following,. Chameleon minor psychic power, Does it work against thermal imaging?

Since it is quite similar to chameleoline cloak, my gut instinct would say it doesn't work, but since it's a psionic power I'd like this clarified.

If you want an official ruling, you'll have to send a message direct to FFG using the "Rules Questions" link at the very bottom of the page, next to User Support, Help, etc.

Thanks, I totally missed that. I somehow even managed to post this to the wrong forum..... I blame the heat.

Looking at the text of it, we can see that it works by messing with reality. To me this would mean that it affects all wavelengths of light, thus messing with thermal imaging.

That's why I asked for a clarification since distort vision doesn't affect TI as per errata 3.0, and it also twists light around the psyker.

Distort vision is bending the visible spectrum of light, presumably. Chameleon could presumably work along a similar premise. Or it could all be reality fusking powers which are not just effecting ones personal perceptions but those of machine as well.

Whenever and whatever the official clarification/ruling is, please share with us.

Thanks

It's really up to the GM how they want to handle Chameleon with some sort of thermal imaging. It should be noted that "thermal imaging" is probably not something very common in 40k. It might be part of an Auspex array or some creatures might see that way, but besides preysense it's going to be pretty rare.

In my games, I would say it does not work on thermal imaging, as the power itself doesn't really define if it works on you (by bending light around you) or on the minds of those looking at you. As a minor psychic power I would rule that it works by manipulating you. I would, however, allow a psyker who understands how thermal imaging works (Tech lore training or possibly something to do with the xeno-biology of creatures with prey sense) to activate a version of this power that does work on them.

As a GM I find little bits like this from time to time. I usually try to make them a big moment in the game, as the crazy alien aligator/hyena hybrid thing stalks the players through the sewers the psyker learns a new trick!

Hopefully this helps!

This is the reply I got from Mack Martin while back.

We did in fact also house ruled how IR-goggles work. You can either negate penalties from poor vision conditions or gain +10% to awareness when conditions are otherwise fine.
