Dragons and other "Cannot be killed" characters

By Stormtower2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

for example

Drogon

Creature Dragon, Cost 6, STR 5
No attachments. Drogon cannot be killed.
etc etc

Someone attacks me (military) with 6 STR. I defend with Drogon. I have another card (Bringer of Gifts) in play.

I lose the challenge, and now I have to choose someone to satisfy the military claim.

Can I choose Drogon and he essentially "saves" himself?

Or am I not allowed to choose Drogon because he "cannot be killed" ... and I'm forced to choose Bringer of Gifts.

Also ... what is the point of the duplicates for Drogon, and cards like:

Black Hatchling

Creature. Dragon. Cost 1, STR 1
No attachments. After Black Hatchling or Drogon comes into play under your control, attach Black Hatchling and its duplicates to Drogon as duplicates, if able.

Is it just in case a card that blanks-out the text box comes up, and by blanking out the text box, Drogon can be killed ... which would make the hatchlings useful to save him?

That's it. You cannot even chose him to die.

BTW, duplicates save the character from being discarded from play, returned to hand and returned to deck as well.

Thanks for the response!

Again, I must have missed the part about saving from discards and return-to-hand/deck. That's good to know.

I still think it's rather sub-optimal that the hatchling cards are forced to become duplicates of the dragon when it comes into play. I like having 1-cost characters that I can use as cannon fodder!

... but I guess the Valyrian Edition versions that I have are better than the other versions. It looks like the other versions of Hatchlings just get discarded when the dragon comes into play.

It's thematic. For example, the Black Hatchling and Drogon are the same dragon, just at different ages. So having both unique characters in play at the same time goes against the source material.

The 5KE hatchlings are actually the best. They have Ambush and become dupes, so if you are about to lose a military challenge or something, you Ambush it into play, it becomes a dupe, then you toss the dupe. Plus, Ambushing them in created a bunch of Response triggers for other 5KE-Targ related stuff.
