Modular rules reference sheets with FAQ and ALL Expansions PLUS rules annotations v1.16!

By zeb, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi all,

Please find here my Arkham Horror reference sheet. I know there are many of them, but the idea here is to justify all rules that are not explicitly given in the rulebooks with a reference or a link. It includes the game mechanism from all expansions, the latest FAQ , the collected rules clarification from Kevin Wilson at FFG and BGG forums and some entries from the long-awaited comprehensive FAQ , which I collected from various posts made by people having access to the draft version. References are given as annotations in the "full" version. Furthermore, modularity allows you to generate a PDF for all kind of expansion combinations.

  1. Although I provide PDF files, I also provide the source file in LYX format, which is a frontend for LATEX, a documentation format that leads to very neat layouts with almost no work on the layout itself. PDF files can then be directly generated from the LYX source. LYX is Free software, available at: http://www.lyx.org/
  2. Modularity: thanks to the branching system in LYX, rules for specific expansions are in separate branches. Using LYX, you may therefore activate none, all or part of the expansion branches, and therefore generate a PDF corresponding to the base game only, to the base game plus any or all of expansions. I include the PDFs for several rules combinations, but using LYX you may be able to generate all combinations.
  3. This work is actually based on a original file by Warren Cheun, who released it in 2005, although this reference sheet has now greatly diverged from the original source. I tried to contact him but could not reach him, however, by releasing the source file he seemed to be ok that others continue his work. He was the first author of the lyx file for the base game, even before the first FAQ was published, and I thank him for the starting material. I then decided to include all rules clarifications and specific mechanics from each expansions. I need also to credit Peter Hansson (spindisc) from BGG forums for the KH rules additions. Finally, I thank all the posters who sent me corrections.
  4. There are specific colours for each expansion rulesets. You may change this colour scheme in the source file if needed.

Download it here: boardgamegeek.com/filepage/27852/arkham-horror-modular-rules-reference-including-fa

Changelog for each revision is published on later posts in this thread.

I hope this will be helpful and you'll find it informative and interesting. Thank you in advance for letting me know of any errors.

Greetings,

have followed this for some time, and with just a cursory glance of the Lurker additions, everything looks good. However, the yellow and green colors I believe needs to be a darker orange and darker green, respectively - and fade away from the "highlighter" color that they currently have.

Otherwise, this remains one of my favorite additions for AH.

Cheers,

Zeb, thank you for the tremendous effort you have put in on this document. I have often hoped that FFG might 'follow your lead' and release a collated version of the rules. In lieu of that, your project is of tremendous value to all AH players.

My only niggle is those bright colours. It's MUCH better now, but my 47 year old eyes are still a bit taxed to see the yellow particularly.

Zeb,

Just a quick note to thank you for all your hard work. I had used an earlier version to get me going with AH and I still keep it handy. With recently buying a few expansions, this will keep me from pulling out the little hair I have left.

Well done!

Perhaps you could state on the list with all expansions which expansion refers to which colour. This is for all of us that do not have all expansions, so we can see which expansion adds the most next time we buy another.

Dear all,

Many thanks for your support and kind words. I'll take your remarks into consideration and will publish an updated document soon.

Aside, I wish I had access to the comprehensive FAQ to clarify or give a definite answer to some ambiguous rules, so if a moderator read this, please let me know if it is possible ot enroll to the proof-reading :)

I would also like to apologise to jgt7771 who noticed a minor error regarding tasks in version 1.15, which mistakenly forgot to correct in 1.16. I shall do it for the next version.

Reagrding the colours, this has been discussed many times and would have some trouble to do further corrections. Indeed, for most colours (except brown for Lurker), I have only used primary ones. It means that cyan is pure cyan (RGB 0,255,255) , green is pure green (RGB 0,255,0), red is pure, etc... I only readjusted the yellow to something darker (RGB 221,221,0 instead of 255,255,0) because it is really difficult to read on screen and on paper. As you might know you cannot print pure, saturated colours, but only approach the colour as much as you can. This is where colour calibration between the screen and the printer (and a scanner) takes place. Therefore if you have a lot of difficulty to print the most saturated colours, it means most of the time that either your printer has a low colour range, or that it is not properly calibrated. Consequentially it is very difficult for me to adjust the colour, because this would be arbitrary, and if I change them for one person, another one would tell me he cannot print it properly.

What I would recommend to people with colour issues would be to check their colour calibration. All printer drivers offer the possibility to change colour intensity in some ways. Also another way would be to redefine the colour on top of the Lyx file and regenerate the PDF. At the very beginning of the file, yellow and brown are already defined this way:

\definecolor{yellow} {RGB} {221,221,0}

You could the same way redefine other colours (such as green) and regenerate the PDF. But really, printer calibration should be preferred, since this is the proper way to do.

To finish, alboy idae of adding the colour code is very sensible, I'll do it.

Hope this helps.

Mmmmh... I think that for the green, I can come up with a darker one, but still "green" indeed. I'll release a new version soon.

...zzzzzzzz...>snort< What? Me? I did what? Noticed what? Uhhh...yeah! Yeah, y-you get...right on that...b-buster...

Heh. No worries, Zeb. For all your effort, I'm not after you for nuthin'. GREAT work on the colors. This yellow (being less bright) feels more appropriate for the sickly "ichor" yellow of the Tattered King anyway. aplauso.gif

I have just experienced new colours. I will release a new version soon, with even more readable yellow and green colours gui%C3%B1o.gif

Really good job you've done. I wish I could dispense more knowledge of some of the other minutia, but as you well know progress has been slow on the new FAQ lengua.gif

Thanks for a great Rules Reference.

Zeb, if you are releasing a new version soon perhaps you could change the spelling of choses too chooses, asuming its not a American way of spelling it. It is in AH+KH, All expansions and All expansions Annotated. You will find lt in Monster Border Effects, vii, Orange Aquatic.

Hi,

As promised, please find the new version 1.17:

'Bastille Day' 14th of July 2010: http://www.filedropper.com/arkham-rules-v117

- added a colour key section and a title!

- readjusted colours: green and yellow are now less saturated and darker, with a more "natural" look. The yellow is still pure but it is just darker and probably better than in 1.16.

- corrected Task/Missions (thanks jgt7771!) and added optional Mission sacrifice in Upkeep (Dunwich)

- some other minor corrections

Thanks for version 1.17. Zeb.

Apart from the choose error which just missed this version, there is an error in the naming of the expansions, it is Curse of the Dark Pharaoh not Black Pharaoh.

lf you do another version at any time can you please amend these.

Thanks again

I have found a third small error in version 1.17.

Its in number 10, Ancient One Awakens!, Final Battle, 2. Attack, it says to remove one Stamina from AO, should this be remove one Doom Token from AO.

Zeb, the colors print AWESOME!!! cool.gif cool.gif cool.gif

Thanks alboy for the corrections, I'll include them with the next release.

Glad that the colours are now working.

The link for the latest version is broken, can you post it again please

Yes, the link is broken!!!!

I've been meaning to chime in here with another thank you Zeb, but it's so hard to find threads on this **** forum. The new colour values are much easier on the eye. Thanks for updating the file at BGG! aplauso.gif

Many thanks, I am glad it is useful. If the filedropper links are broken, you may find the latest version (1.17) on Boardgamegeek. gui%C3%B1o.gif

11th October 2011

Version 1.18! As usual, the lyx file (a frontend to Latex) can be used to regenerate a reference sheet for any kind of combination, with or without annotations. I also join many pregenerated PDFs.

Download it there: boardgamegeek.com/filepage/27852/arkham-horror-modular-rules-reference-including-fa

Plenty of changes:
- Updated for the revised edition of the Dark Pharaoh expansion. I will not maintain a sheet for the first edition of this expansion, but the rules are available in version 1.17 and lower.
- New references in annotations, which refer to official answers from the game designers or people that have access to the draft of the long-awaited comprehensive FAQ
- Official errata/clarifications for some cards (among them the infamous Kingsport Gate card "
- Other corrections (thanks to all who sent me or posted corrections) and rewritings.

As usual, I would be glad if you send me a message in case you see an error.
Thanks!

Thanks to Damon Asher, who spotted some supplementary Deep Ones Uprising conditions. A version 1.19 is on its way!

cool, very clear and thorough, a great aid to give to beginning players, thank you!

Many thanks. However, because of its density, I would be afraid to scare beginners demonio.gif .

On the other hand, what I tried to do, is to be as thorough as possible, reference all official clarifications, and make it usable as if it were a computer program flowchart.
