Hand's Solar + Chella Daughter of Cheyk

By Stormtower2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

This was a hypothetical situation, but I'm thinking it might be an interesting combo to build into a deck. The question is ... is it a legal combo?

The Hand's Solar is in play ... heck, let's say there are 3 copies of The Hand's Solar in play.

The Hand's Solar : Lannister Location : "Kneeling characters get -1 STR"

I have Chella, and I'm about to send her off on a military challenge...

Chella Daughter of Cheyk : Neutral Character : 3 Strength, Military : "Any Phase: kneel 1 influence to choose and kneel a location. Then stand Chella Daughter of Cheyk."

... and I do have several influence available.

To make sure I get this right, I started referring to the flowcharts in the FAQ.

So follow along with me, and let me know if I get this right.

1. Active Player (me) declares challenge type and opponent. So I announce that I'm doing a military challenge against "Bob."

2. Active Player kneels attacking characters. So I indicate that Chella is attacking, and I kneel her. I indicate no other attackers.

.... at this point, the Passive Ability of The Hand's Solar hits ... 3 times. We quickly go through resolving that ... 3 times. Chella now has 0 STR.

.... now it's possible to do Player Actions. I decide not to do anything yet. Bob sits and stares at me for a while.

3. Active Player chooses Stealth targets. (I have no stealth)

4. Defending Player kneels defending characters.

... here comes a decision tree. For now, let's say Bob decides to defend against this 0 STR attack.

4a. Bob kneels his Home Guard (4-STR) to defend. Bob indicates no other defenders.

... again, the Passive Ability of The Hand's Solar hits 3 times, and that brings Home Guard down to 1 STR.

... again it's possible to do Player Actions. Now I spend 1 influence to activate Chella's ability, and I kneel one of my opponent's locations (let's say it's The Hand Solar) and stand Chella back up.

... now that Chella is no longer kneeling, we unwind the passive ability of the Hand's Solar. Chella is back to 3 STR.

5a. We resolve the rest of the challenge. I have 3 STR, Bob has 1 STR. I win the challenge.

Did I get that part right?

Here's the other half of the decision tree...

4b. Bob decides not to defend ... Chella has 0 STR, after all.

... I follow through with activating Chella's ability ... which stands Chella back up, and she has 3 STR.

5b. We resolve the rest of the challenge. I have 3 STR, Bob did not defend (0 STR). I win the challenge, and gain power as well.

Yep, that's all basically correct. The only nitpick I would have is that The Hand's Solar's ability is what the FAQ refers to as a "Constant Ability," not a "Passive Ability." It has no point of initiation. It is just "always on." So I wouldn't describe The Hand's Solar's ability as "resolving." It was already in effect before the attack and Chella's strength is instantly lowered as soon as she is knelt (with no chance for the effect to be canceled).

Correct with the exception that The Hand's Solar is a constant effect, not a passive effect. You do not have to resolve it, nor do you "rewind" it. It just applies whenever you do a STR check on a character that is kneeling, and does not apply when you do a STR check on a character that is standing.

Cool! Thanks all!

Looks like I found something worthy to be added to my rather weak Targaryen deck.
