Steward of the Night's Watch and The Wall

By pateras, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Just to confirm, using The Wall to bring the Steward of the Night's Watch out of my hand as a defender triggers its ability that causes all other players to discard a card, right?

No. Steward of the Watch says "After you play Steward of the Watch from your hand...." With The Wall, you put him into play; you do not play him.

Compare Steward of the Watch's text to something like Benjen Stark ("After Benjen Stark comes into play ...) to see the difference.

Ah, glad I checked. Thanks.

Actually, the way I learned the difference between "play" and "put into play" was thanks to Scroll Bearer:

Scroll Bearer (Valyrian Edition)
Lannister Character, Ally, 1 STR Intrigue
"After you play Scoll Bearer from your hand, you may put into play a 0-cost Limited location from your hand."

The Valyrian edition only had 1 0-cost Limited location (Kingsroad Farmstead); and it certainly didn't make sense to me that I would "need" Scroll Bearer to put a 0-cost card into play....

... and then it clicked ... Scroll Bearer allows me to bypass the "Limited" restriction ... because I wasn't "playing" it as part of the Marshalling "action". It was "put into play" for me.

If cards can talk .....

Tyrion: "Hey, who gave us that Limited Location?"

Me: "Don't look at me, I played a different Limited Location..."

Tyrion: "Oh, must have been the Scroll Bearer. It's just a Kingsroad Farmstead."

Not just "Limited," but the OOH gold penalty is not paid when you "put a card into play" instead of playing it. You could use your Scroll Bearer to put Iron Mines or Xaro's Home into play for free (both of which were available in the Valyrian environment, even if they were not in the Valyrian set itself).

Hmm, the old versions of The Iron Mines and Xaro's Home had the Limited keyword?

Well, according to http://agot.dbler.com/ they don't.

However, also according to Dabbler ... these are other limited 0-cost locations with a House affiliation:

Aegon's Garden (Westeros)

Great Keep (Westeros)

Winterfell Heart Tree (Westeros)

Sea Dragon Tower (Westeros)

etc etc... basically giving 1 gold or a discount

King's Hall from Ice and Fire is probably the best to combo with that Scroll Bearer as it allows for a one-time 3-cost reduction

Well .. we've derailed the original thread enough, I suppose.

No, they didn't. But they are 0-cost location and could be "put into play" by the Scroll Bearer's effect without regard for the OOH gold penalty.

The point I was making is that the "put into play" ability wasn't just about getting around Limited, it was also about getting around gold penalties.

I agree with everything you've said, ktom...

... except that Scroll Bearer (at least, the ones that I have) require the location to be both 0-cost and Limited.
