1st game question

Player 1 has Catelyn Stark with Nymeria attached. Lets assume Player 2 mounts a sucessful military challenge, and player one has to decide which character to kill.

According to the cards, Player 1 can choose Catelyn Stark, then kneel Nymeria to prevent Catelyn Stark from being killed.

Both players are new, so it appears to us this prevents Player 2 from ever causing Player 1 from ever having to actually kill off a character after losing a military challenge.

What we we missing?

You aren't missing anything. Nymeria is doing her job in that example you gave.

In order to cause that player to actually lose a character, you must either deal with the attachment in some way, or use a claim 2 plot or other such effect that would allow you to kill more than one character in a round (events are most common).

We figured out the claim 2 plot card, but can you give an exmaple of how you would deal with such an attachment? Thanks!

Well, depending on what house you are playing and what cards you have available, there are many solutions. The easiest is to play Targaryen and just play the plot "Mad King's Legacy". They also have nice characters such as "Dragon Thief" that can easily discard attachments.

If playing Stark yourself, you could use Robb Stark from the Core Set to kill an additional character. You could use the event "winter is coming" to raise your claim during the military challenge, or use "die by the sword" from the "Lords of Winter" set. Playing a "frozen solid" would blank Nymeria as well.

Lannister has the event "a Lannister pays his debts" or "I'm you writ small", or could play the plot "Let my porridge fly" from the "Princes of the Sun" expansion.

There are of course many more ways than I've just shared with you and the above is by no means exhaustive. If you tell me what house you like to play and what cards you have available, I could provide more specific methods for you.

Above and beyond the call of duty - thanks! This makes alot more sense. Other than that one issue we had a wonderful game. I can see now (just the tip of the iceberg) why you all love this game so much.

Many layers yet to peel...

It may be helpful for new players: on my site (link in my signature) you can check "Get rid of attachment" option to see all available cards for this.

Most welcome, and yes, Rogue30's suggestion is very good for new and old players alike. One can see at a glance what cards are able to discard an attachment.

A correction to my previous example: "Dragon Thief" would not actually get rid of "Nymeria", because Nymeria is a unique attachment. But in a general sense, the thieves can still get rid of other attachments.

Enjoy and let us know should you have any other questions, concerns, or thoughts you'd like to share.

another way if you are using martell or greyjoy is to canncle the respons of the save with he calls it thinking or what not

Hey, For using attachement, say Nymeria to save a character is consider a response?

Also If I have a claim value 2, opponent Nymeria has successfully save the only stark character from a military defeat. Does the opponent need to kill the same character to satisfy claim 2?

Thanks

I'm not sure why do you ask, Nymeria's ability say: "Response: Kneel Nymeria to save attached character from being killed."

So it is definitely a response. Generally if you want to save someone from being killed, you need a save response - note that discarding duplicate is also a save response.

"High-claim Military Challenges" Rulebook page 22:

If, during a military challenge, the defending
player loses a challenge, and the attacking player
has a claim of 2 or higher, the defending player
must kill the required number of different characters,
all at once. Thus, the defender may not
choose to kill the same character multiple times,
even if that character could be saved.
