Blighted to Death

By Mighty Maltim, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Well tonight was both the quickest game our group has played, as well as our most crushing defeat. We got our rears handed to us by Abhoth and (mostly) the King in Yellow herald. Daisy, Luke, Rex and Rita were our investigators. On the second turn, the rumor 'Good Work Undone' was revealed. Having no seals on the board yet, we figured we'd just let it fail and build up our resources in the meantime. It all was fine and dandy, until right after the rumor failed and 'No One Can Help You Now' came up, preventing us from sealing anything with our accumulated tokens. Several monster surges and Blight cards later, Miriam Beecher lowered our gate limit, thus summoning Abhoth for final combat, who was being bolstered by Joey the Rat. With not a single physical weapon at our disposal, our magic weapons and spells were devastated by his magic resistance. Turn before the last, he healed up what little damage we managed to deal to him with the sinister plot, 'the Children.' After that, he got a preemptive strike, killing off the last investigators, Luke and Rex, ending the game with his doom track completely filled.

Everything that could have gone wrong, DID go wrong. Gates opened up on investigators at the most inconvenient times, monsters blocked our movement at every turn, including Riots stirred up by Doyle Jefferies, and Olivar Thomas popped up at exactly the right time to steal away a chance at obtaining a seal. It was extremely...frustrating D:

Over the next few days as word of the investigator's demise spread to various locations across the globe, friends of the fallen had gathered to pay their respects. Stories were told while stoic silence cast a somber plume of sadness.

In Arkham, Daisy was remembered for her adoration of fine books and a sibling read from Poe's "Raven".

A private gathering for Luke was held in Lancaster Pennsylvania, his Aunt Dolores and her two children pulled together a collection of pictures and drawings that he had created in childhood.

In Rome, Father Samuel led a wake complete with full province while David Overell a lifelong friend spoke eloquently about Rex and his passions.

Rita's family had a large wake for her in New Orleans, there they celebrated her life and drank to her memory.

In four separate locations they dealt with the loss, yet simultaneously a church bell chimed the passing, and each attendant turned their heads as a slight tremor shook the ground. In the silence, a whisper moaned on the winds.

"...And those that swam not swiftly ashore when they fell into the pool from Abhoth, were devoured by mouths that gaped in the parent bulk".

Very nice XD Showed this to my players. They enjoyed the eulogy, lol

That's one of the things I love about Arkham Horror. Even when you lose, it is still memorable and awesome.
