Runewitch and the Epic variant

By Skie, in Runewars

Hey all

I'm looking for ideas for new special ability of Asharra the Runewitch (a good hero, sorry if I've misspelled her name, don't have the cards with me now). Normally her special ability allows her to check more than one of the secret runestones. However, in the epic variant there are no secret runes... So she becomes the only hero with a worthless ability. Any ideas how to change that? Perhaps she could move runestones between friendly locations? or all locations?

I'm not sure what I would do. Personally, I wouldn't do the "rune switching" thing because I created a whole slew of heroes for all the other Descent/Runebound characters, and one of them I created has rune-moving abilities.

Perhaps you could do something similar to Jonas; if she ends her Quest Phase in an area with a Rune token, you gain 1 influence?

When I play the epic variant I use the exploration tokens, and make a house rule that the Runewitch can look at an adjacent exploration token.

I like the idea, but I think that can make her TOO powerful. Do you only allow her to look at one token per Quest Phase (other than the one she lands in), or all of them? If it's just one per year, that may not be too bad. But if you can see all of them, it means her owner can easily find a Dragon Throne and wait until the right moment to spring it.

When we play the epic version we don't change her. She just sucks. An old maid in the deck isn't that big of a deal.

To be fair, there are several heroes who's abilities don't really end up coming into play during the game sometimes anyway. Like Varikas the Dead - his ability doesn't do much if he never gets hurt.

Yeah but his ability is one of the best if not THE best hero ability.

I dunno, Battlemage Jaes is, for me, the best, with Mad Carthos coming awfully close.

The ability of verikas the dead to continuously duel and quest without ever having to heal is amazing.

battlemage is nice but I'd rather be questing or dueling than killing a few random dudes, it is nice to use when you don't have a quest or opponents hero in range, but I would rather be out there getting shards and rewards.

Mad Carthos is completely awesome.

My other favorite heroes are the one that draws two reward cards and the one that can draw quest cards. I don't remember their names but those two are amazing.

Except in the average regular game, he only gets to do maybe 2 or 3 quests/duels anyway. In epic, it may bump up to 4 or 5. And for a lot of them, he may not get hurt much anyway. It's a good ability, don't get me wrong, but I don't think it's the "best" at all.

It depends on the map situation. I think I like Battlemage's the most because of the OPTIONS it provides - and I'm one who believes options are power. Varikas doesn't give you options - he just lives longer. He's still one-dimensional. Jaes can be more flexible. Just like Mad Carthos :)

I'm not sure if I agree they are "amazing" - they are good, but it depends on what they produce. One-Fists ability is only good if he's able to do a lot of the quests himself. If he fails, it doesn't help him. It doesn't help him in duels, either, and depending on what rewards he pulls, it may not really benefit. It's handy, but I'm not sure I'd call it "amazing".

Same with Silhouette's ability. It can be useful if you get crappy quests. If you are getting decent quests already, her ability doesn't do much. Handy, yes, but not "amazing".

Of course, that's all just my opinion :)
