Warhammer online

By Gallows, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I don't like MMOs very much. I do however enjoy WAR because it's so laid back and easy to get into. Love the world too of course.

Mythic is taking over service in Europe instead of GOA and from the 7th of july you can get 14 days for free.

Wonderful MMO... all MMOs are crap, but this one is likeable.

Having played a few MMOs and deciding I will never enjoy them at a 'competitive/diehard' level I do have to say that the Warhammer Online one is my favorite (with Lord of the Rings close behind - their storytelling within the quests is great).

For Warhammer, it's mostly the setting and 'vibe', but it does have some cool stuff like public scenarios going for it. What it does need is MORE INSTANCES, which I know won't happen as it's a PVP-centered game (shame that).

I let my subscription lax because I was enjoying the LotR model, but if there's enough play with the forumites maybe I'll join back up.

My personal opinion about what Mythic made is: CRAP.

But maybe its because I expected more RPG, and less kill, krush, and destroy.

I tried it on many occasions (when I was really bored), but it always ended the same.

Crap, crap, and crap again (unlike some other MMO's I played - for a short time if I may say, I agree with You Gallows in this: all MMO's are CRAP, unfortunately this one is the biggest crap lengua.gif).

This game doesn't offer anything beyond: go there kill this, go that way, kill something else, kill other players... what the hell??

I do not like the graphics (it WOW like child candy, not Warhammerish).

I do not like the leveling system (not even close to what I name Warhammer)

I do not like the gameplay, the quests, the items... actually I don't like anything in this game at all, except its name maybe, and the fact, that it in some way allows you to see a part of Warhammer world by your own eyes.

I tried to show it to my friends in fragile hope, that in teamplay it will be better, but NONE of my friends managed to play it longer that 2 weeks!!

The word they used to characterise this game was most of the time: BORING.

The original concepts for the Warhammer MMO were amazing, it was essentially a project to put the RPG online using the class setup, stats living cities concept from the RPG. Instead what we got was just Dark Age of Camelot v2. Whoopity-do.

If you look at it that way, sure it's a disappointment, but straight stat ports to MMOs don't always work too well. Look at the mess that is D&D Online. I can't believe how much wasted junk my character has/does/is just to fit within the 'model' of the RPG.

Yeah, I unfortunately do remember, how it was supposed to be at the beginning.

And I'm REALLY disappointed sad.gif

PS: D&D online for some reason I liked very much, I played it for half a year or so (no other MMO managed to attract me for longer... maybe except Mortal Online, but It was beta, so it does not count, because I do not intend to extend my subscription seeing how it is today)

The only thing DDO has going for it, IMO is that it's free.

Yeah, I remember playing WAR about 1.5 to 2 years before it actually saw the light of day at GenCon SoCal. It was fun then, didn't worry about it matching the RPG.

To be honest, it's like getting upset when a movie doesn't live up to your expectations after reading the story in a book. For DDO, I think they tried too hard to match it to the game. After all, 20 levels is a bad idea for an MMO, so they 'adjusted' it by inserting an artificial level bit where you rank up (level up ) five times before you actually level up from Level 1 to Level 2 and so forth. My 'level 3 Paladin's really like level 17.

I played DDO when it wasn't free yet.

And max level then was 16 if I remember right (but yeah, those 5 sub-levels were present).

Also I never played pen&paper D&D (and do not intend to), so it was something new for me lengua.gif

And I had a really fun team to play with gran_risa.gif (unlike WAR, where all my friends resigned after 1-3 weeks of first free month of play)

WAR's gone through some growing pains, but since I've been playing it only since Thanksgiving last year I can't speak to what it was before then, only that when I log in for some mindless entertainment in the Old World I'm satisfied with what I get.

I played some WAR (since it's free up to level 10 right now). I've never been big on MMO's but I'm pretty sure that if "Kill people and take their stuff" is all it has going for it, it's a pretty big reason why it's so lame.

I agree with Sunatet. It's crap. It is a plotless PvP fest. If you love that stuff, have lots of time on your hands and/or are just a bad-parent, it's probably fun.

One good thing is that it's set in the Warhammer world. I got some good ideas for variant chaos maurauders, etc (something that I really wish was in the rpg 3e). Another good thing is that it has VERTICAL CHARACTER ADVANCEMENT (ahem!). ;)

Also, I play a Knight of Myrmidia..the one class NOT MMO book! :(

I played WAR to rank 40, which is the maximum level. It really was missing only one thing; a third side. With only two sides, it was mainly just about who had more players on at any given time, so it made the PvP aspect suffer.

As far as storyline, MMORPGs really never have much of a storyline, so it wasn't expected for me at all.

I probably wouldn't recommend it, mainly because the game is more than likely in maintenance mode, meaning that they won't be doing much new with it. It was a really great concept, and would have been excellent if they had added three sides instead of two.
