French National Report !

By PRODIGEE, in CoC Organized Play

Hi everybody !

Just a tiny post to say that our National are over ! Angelius is now the official Frenc LCG Champion and we have spend two days playing ...

Hastur is the main faction this year, with almost 3 decks from the top 4 playing the same cards (1 turn : Magah Birds, Cavern of the Flame + The70 steps).

Agency reachs second places, with Day dreamers strategy.

We had 17 players (which still makes us the most popular events in France for Cthulhu LCG ... which maybe is the case for the whole world, who knows !!)

A lot of rules issues, which were submitted previously to FFG but did'nt receive any answers. I'm willing to create a petition to ask FFG to answer it, but there's still no moves from the company.

PRODIGEE, thanks! You are an excellent cthulhu liaison between two continents. Congratulations to the winner and all participants. Magah, Cavern of Flame, and Seventy Steps look to be the rule of law these days, at least for France Nationals and NYC Regionals. More information would be great!

I wonder if our NY Regionals outcome and deck lists had any influence in France?

Prodigee,

Please post your comprehensive list of unanswered rules questions. I think this would be very helpful going into Gen Con.

If nothing else it would be a list we could ask individual tournament organizers their rulings before play begins so that everyone knows the answers for that particular game.

Please add the Twilight Gate + Azathoth into your list because I would like to know how a particular judge will rule that before a tournament starts...

Thanks!

French cthulhu, indeed European cthulhu, are strong and storied metas. I think it's safe to guess that the European metas came up with half the great decks. Magahs, Steps, and Cavern are the tools of champions.

We playtested bird + steps deck since last tournament in Paris in March. It was just after the mulligan rule release. The problem is the cumulative effect of getting 3 characters with 1 domain (that have a free attack next turn if you play steps) with chance to get the steps combo. If you have no direct kill or disrupt to handle the situation it’s 6 free tokens. It’s like attacking on first turn with 3 characters if you’re the beginning player…

After you can use many tricks to gain one more turn to go on 4 tokens by managing exhaust characters of your opponent, like agoraphobia, fischers, behind bar, cavern, pillar… You can also play freely endless interrogation, that’s clearly broken with the recursive way. 3 domains = 4 cards discarded = No chance to win. I loose semi final due to endless interrogation because you can’t block or manage 3 birds in 3 stories during your next opponent turn with steps on table. Only one passing bird and you can apply multiple times the endless interrogation effect.

During the French regional, in top 8, 5 decks had this combo with a different splash (Agency, syndicate or Yog). In Top 4, I was the only guy without Hastur playing a Myskha/Agency dreamer deck. I finished third. In mirror match with this Hastur combo, almost all the time the guy playing first won the game.

Just some maths… Use this excellent link ( http://www.kibble.net/magic/magic10.php ). For excel in French it’s “LOI.HYPERGEOMETRIQUE”. Without mulligan you have 35% chance to have a bird or steps in first hand… That’s a lot. The mulligan rules without a drawback (7 cards instead of 8) just amplify this combo problem.

My point of view is the cumulative effect of bird + steps + mulligan is too powerful. I have suggested on French forum a bird errata “going into hand” instead of “put into play”. For endless interrogation, it was forbidden to play it with its recursive way (errata was 1 success story = 1 time endless effect) in last French tournaments but we had to apply official rules during the regional. We had the same kind of ban for Eibon before the 2 tokens errata.

I'm not sure why people are so hung up on Azathoth + Twilight Gate. You do realize that Azathoth has to be played from your HAND to get the effect right? So even if you could Twilight Gate him (which clearly the intentions are that you cannot), it wouldn't do anything other than having a really big dude in play.

Also, congrats to the French National champion. Was hoping that people wouldn't discover how good Birds + Steps was until AFTER worlds but c'est le vie. :(

Not yet a complete report but you could find some result on the French National here :

As said by Blacksun, if you are looking the top 4, you will find 3 hastur / something deck

1- Angelius : Hastur / Syndicat (exhaust)
2- Dadajef : Hastur / syndicat (skill reducer)
3- BlackSun : Agency / miska (dreamers)
4- ArticMan : Hastur (skill, control)

The final was between 2 decks hastur / syndicat. Decklists are here on the Cenacle :

1- Angelius : Hastur / Syndicat : cenacle-hd.bb-fr.com/les-decks-de-champions-f43/deck-champion-de-france-lcg-2010-poitiers-t1706.htm#18698

2- Dadajef : Hastur / syndicat : cenacle-hd.bb-fr.com/proposez-vos-decks-f44/dadadeck-cdfrance-2010-t1707.htm#18704

The decklist is in english, but the explanations to play these decks are in French. If I have time I will make an English version as for the Faq for the problematic cards. You can find this unofficial faq in french here : dosexplora.free.fr/telecharger/Cthulhu_lcg_complement_faq_Cenacle_Chthonien.pdf

and some pictures from Paladur : tournoiscthulhu.canalblog.com/ (about the Agot, warhammer and Cthulhu's tournaments)

Shubfan27,

FYI - you might be looking at black border Azathoth....

•Azathoth, The Blind Idiot God
-was-
Game Text : Response: after Azathoth enters play from your hand, each player must sacrifice all characters not named Azathoth and all support cards he controls. At the end of the turn, you are eliminated from the game.
-now-
dropped "from your hand"

Hum, I do not have my cards under my eyes, but I do remember that the Twilight Gate does'nt work with Ancient-Ones, nope ??? serio.gif

Concerning the French Nationals, I woulnd't think that the report of the tier one decks will change anything in the American meta :

Our french meta is quite based on Rush and Hastur uncomitting stuffs. But we also has some Shubb, Cthulhu and neutrals decks based on different angles of analysis. I've posted some decks on the CENACLE, for those of you who can read french ^^, in a way to propose alternative constructs.
