TN Regional Results

TN had 15 players, with the top 4 being Targ Shadows, Bara Summer Agenda, Stark/Siege, Stark Siege (two VERY different decks, I might add).

  1. Jonathan Benton
  2. Clint McGill
  3. Wade Freeman
  4. Sean Wiggins

A huge thanks to the GA players who traveled up yesterday. I'll have more time to post details later.

Grats All!

What decks correlate with the top four players? Or was the order mentioned the order of the decks?

I'm assuming Clint McGill is still playing Bara...

Sounds like a nice turnout, and congrats Jonathan!

Congrats Jonathan! I'd also like to know who was playing what. Good to see Bara in there, and not surprising to see stark. I mean the box just came out a few weeks ago. Also I'm guessing one of the stark sieges used epic battles and one used direwolves or something.

You mean there are other Stark builds?! LIES!!

Yeah, the order was correct, so I was playing Targ. Of the two Siege decks in the top 4, Wade played Epic Battles/Direwolves and Sean played House Tully with kill effects.

Some other interesting notes -

5 Starks (3 Siege of Winterfell, 2 no Agenda)

3 Baratheon (2 Kings of Summer, 1 no Agenda)

3 Targaryen (no Agendas)

2 Martell (both no Agenda)

2 Greyjoy (1 Kings of Winter, 1 The Free Folk)

0 Lannister

The new Stark stuff is not only really good, it's fun to play and it has a great matchup against Lannister. Couple that with how much my players are sick of playing with and against Lannister, it's not really much of a surprise that no Lannister showed up. Lannister may still be the favorite against all the other houses (and is in my analysis), but when you're expecting a large percentage of the field to be Stark, it is certainly risky.

Take Lannister out of the equation, and the field really seems wide open.

An enormous thanks goes to ktom for bringing Targ Shadows back to my consciousness. I had a very similar deck built months ago...for about 3 days. We always start by testing a new deck against what we feel is the current best deck, which at the time was Lannister Shadows. So if a new deck can't beat the reigning decktype somewhat consistently, or even 50/50, we move on. Thus the Targ Shadows didn't last long. The problem was that Lannister doesn't need King's Landing for draw, but the Targ really does. Lannister doesn't have to work to cripple the best Targ cards - a lot of it happens incidentally as they play Shadows cards and King's Landing traited locations.

I wasn't thrilled with the thought of playing Stark since I felt there could be 7-8 Stark decks running around. And I really didn't want to play a rush deck since I'm a control player by nature, but I hadn't found a control build that I liked in this faster environment. I had been testing a Targ Stark treaty all week that could kill a ton of characters, but was just too risky against Siege decks if things didn't fall exactly right. I really had fun with that deck, however, and was extremely disappointed when I had to rule it out. But when ktom had great success with his deck in NYC, that was good evidence that a straight Targ control was good enough to compete with the fast decks flying around right now.

I built it and played it a couple of times on Friday night, and loved how it played, my only reservation being that I was more experienced with the Stark builds I was considering. But I went 6-0-1 with it, which ended up being a bit of a hybrid between kotm's deck and my old one, as I borrowed some of his card choices and quantities, such as doubling up on some of the key Targ locations, which also had the added benefit of freeing up the plot selection of Building Season that I was running in my version. So props to Kevin for helping me out on this one. :) I had a blast playing the deck all day.

Detailed stats and pics to follow...

Congratulations, Jonathan. I think this is the first regional that Targ has won. Interested to see your version of the Targ Shadows.
