Update on Masks

By Ornendil, in Fan Creations

I'm making slow but steady progress on my Masks of Nyarlathotep expansion. It is going to be epic. Basically creates a macro game on top of standard AH where your investigators are trying to defeat a global conspiracy led by the Crawling Chaos himself.

current count of elements:

16 new allies

8 Agents of Nyarlathotep (new deck using the blight card base)

5 Cult Leaders (Heralds that come and go)

16 new monsters

15 Mask items (new deck using exhibit card base)--basically like exhibit items that are gained through encounters

3 new spells

A new expansion board (map of the world) with 15 new locations (5 'neighborhoods') and 3 special locations (only reachable through encounters and or campaign cards

6 new location encounter decks (New York City, London, Egypt, Kenya, Shanghai, and Special Locations)--not sure how many cards in each, shooting for 5

A deck of Campaign cards similar to Mythos cards but only drawn when a Doom token is added to the AO

A new bad ass version of Nyarlathotep as AO and as a standard Herald

Currently no new gates, gate cards or Mythos cards

I hope to be able to start play-testing in the next week or two, though the deck of campaign cards may take a while. After a bit of play testing and tweaking, I'll start posting card images... so look for them ~2 weeks.

I will also include a brief rule booklet given the number of new mechanics and elements added. Also, if anyone is a fan of the campaign, I'm going to be looking for encounter ideas... Thanks

Good to hear!

Just a suggestion, with regards to Location Event Cards, you might consider to create at least seven, so the players don't have too much of an idea what to expect after a few plays, and to offer more variety. When writing them, you might develop a theme for each location, which all/most of the cards relate to, in some manner. It migth be person, event, item,... It helps in the writing and providing focus. Being that your working off of what was a role playiing adventure (?), maybe each of those locations, already have a developed theme.

You might make a few Arkham Mythos Cards that come into play based off of events in the wider world. This might help tie in Arkham to the marcro-game that you are devising. The center of the Arkaham game universe still ought to be Arkham, or do you disagree? They might even trigger a gate in a far away location.

Good suggestions, yeah, I think 7 would be a better minimum, I've started writing the encounters and they should fill up fast. I also think I will include some Arkham-linked mythos cards and some other ways to link Masks back to the main game, not entirely sure what those would be yet. Arkham should still be the center since I don't think I'd be able to come up with enough to make Masks a stand alone game :) . Should be fun trying to thwart the opening of the great gate and the Deep Ones rising.

so far I'm not doing gate openings for the Mask locations only because so many things target the locations, esp. the cult leaders and the campaign cards (which may also provide a way to connect to Arkham since you draw one whenever the doom track advances regardless of where the investigators are).

I hope to be able to post a majority of the cards soon so you'll be better able to see the mechanics involved
