A Question on the Lasting Effect of Attachments

By guyhancock, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi there, I couldn't see an answer to this one, so am asking for some clarification on a situation we had last night.

Here's the scenario:

  • An opponent had Margaery Tyrell, with a duplicate and Lightbringer;
  • During marshalling I attached Flame Kissed to her; and
  • Then in challenges, I gave her -1 Str with Aegon's Legacy.

Now for the question:

My opponent knelt Lightbringer to save Marg but, presumably, the combination of -3 Str killed if 0 is still in effect (until the end of the phase). Does this mean that it keeps on "killing" Marg? Or, does Lightbringer save her for the entire phase? If the sword doesn't save her does the poison combination kill her duplicate and then her?

cheers

Guy

You are correct in thinking that the -3 STR and kill if STR is 0 will continue to kill the character. This is what is referred to as a terminal effect. In order to properly save a character from a terminal effect, you must remove the effect AND save the character from the kill at the same time. For a good (only?) example of a card that can successfully do this see Risen from the Sea.

Excellent news.

Thanks for the reply.

Guy

The answer is right(about the death of a character with 0 STR), but there are problems with your scenario:

1.- Aegon's legacy: you can use it only in dominance not in challenges, and cannot use it on character with attachments. Margaery has lightbribger.

2.- Flame-kissed has a similar problem. If attached character has other attachments, attached character cannot get -2 STR and is killed if its STR is 0.

So Margaery cannot die in that scenario ;)

Yeah, Flame-Kissed doesn't work if there are other attachments attached. But you would be correct if Lightbringer weren't there and you used Forever Burning on her.

To be technical (and I'm only being technical to answer to the "only?" in your post), in order to save a character with a terminal effect, you must save the character and remove it from the terminal state. Using Risen from the Sea to boost a character's strength is one example. Another (and I'm just plagiarizing the FAQ here) is Core Set Viserys. If Viserys had Flame-Kissed played on him, you could use his ability to save him because it not only saves him but also removes him from the terminal state (by removing him from play back to your hand).
