Lieutenant battle questions

By poobaloo, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Quoting the book,

"If the overlord has any treachery, he may spend it on a hand of cards. Each card added to his hand in this way costs its normal treachery cost. Additionally, two cards without a treachery cost can be added to his hand for one treachery of the correct type."

Does this mean, if you have say 1 purple treachery - you can add 1 purple card, and "additionally" two regular trap cards, for a deck of 3? Or is it one purple treachery card OR two non-purple trap cards? I hope it's the 3, otherwise you're going into a battle with a deck of 1 card, and that isnt really very fun since you know what card you'll draw every time. Draw it and discard it, till you have enough threat to play it (once) then play it and it's done?

Thanks!

Sorry to say that but you have to choose. So if you got one purple treachery pick one card with a treachery value of one purple OR two of the purple treachery cards with a value of 0.

But that's not too bad. The OL should be (mostly) very strong in the OL battles anyway. And by the time the campaign continues you should 'buy' more treachery anyway, which gives you more cards in every battle...

2 things

1) Each treachery point can be spent on either 1 treachery card or 2 normal cards of the appropriate type, not both.

2) The cards in a lieutenant encounter start all in your hand, even if you have the maximum of 9 treachery and purchase 18 cards with that amount. Discarded cards are no longer usable in that encounter.

Oh, so you dont draw thru your mini-deck, they just go into your hand. Neat. Ok well that makes more sense I guess, then you get to play each card only once, based on threat you earn by the "gain 1 threat per hero per round" mechanic.

What do most ppl try to get? I could see good use for a CB to try to disarm that one hero that can crush you, but also taking two Rages if they would double up the LT's battle. Could you use a rage with a battle action? To get more than two attacks?

That question has been asked before and the response was: No... the card allows you to attack two times which you can already do due to the battle action. In this case the card which allows you to move two times your normal movement is great because, if you declare a battle action, you can move 2 times your movement AND attack two times.

Other great cards are (in my opinion):

-Danger (gives you 10 threats for free... with the reinforcement during an lieutanent battle this is huge, a deamon costs 7 btw ;)

-of course Dark Charm and/or Animated Weapons (its almost a safe kill)

-Lone Troll (put aim on him and that's (now really) a safe kill)

... i think every card can be nice in the right circumstances. I usually go for Dark Charm, Crushing Blow, Danger and/or the one which allows you to move two times your normal movement (**** the name would be great right now ;) ... and if i got treachery left I pick some power cards just to discard them asap to gain threat. Again, in a lieutanent battle threat is really powerful (reinforce, spend for extra movement, spend for extra dice when attacking...)

But that's just the way I play the OL. Don't know what others might think.

Don't forget that spawn cards are played a little differently in encounters. Basically, playing a spawn card gives you the listed monsters as reinforcements that turn, which you can activate using normal reinforcement rules the next turn. You can still buy reinforcements at the end of a turn, and encounters don't use the spawn token, so the only restriction is the normal 1 spawn card per turn (if you can afford it). This means if you play a lone Troll, you have to wait until your next turn to use it, and you have to bring it on from off-board.

Note that Rage is almost exactly equivalent to Charge. The Lieutenant can Run and Rage, or Battle and Charge. Of course, Rage might also be useful for a particularly strong supporting monster - such as a Gold Master Naga benefiting from Eliza Farrow's Brilliant Commander (to make it a Master) and Command 2 (+ Master Naga's own command)....

Sadly (disastrously!) in the heat of battle the inability of Knockback to affect large monsters was forgotten and the Naga was battle-knockbacked twice into the midst of the heroes (and out of the trees) and then swarmed, so she never got off a shot. corazon_roto.gif

Ambush is another card I like in LT encounters.

Does it allow you to activate monsters planned for reinforcements next turn?

No, Reinforcements are only allowed to be activated on your next turn. Ambush doesn't change that.

It's a little derailing, but since we are speaking of the way that rage and charge works for the lieutenants. I was wondering the other day, if you have a master monster that is stunned. Can you opt for a move, and then play rage to get two attacks? Or opt for an attack and then play charge to get double move? effectively disregarding the stun token?

Unfortunately, this is illegal. gui%C3%B1o.gif Per the lieutenant encounter rules in the rulebook, you are not allowed to use treachery to put power cards in your hand.

Uppss... didn't know that. Hopefully my party never reads this :)

But as I didn't play them it's not that bad... (but still illegal in this case). Got to take a look but perhaps 2 treachery cards without a treachery cost bring even more threat. Thanks for this information anyway!!!

Lt.'s can only reinforce monsters listed on their card as minions

But I do know this... :)

Still reinforcement is a very strong/important thing. And as Kang-Amar-Atoth (is this right?) has a deamon on his side you can also reinforce a deamon. But also sorcerers or other monsters can be very nice to reinforce....

I'm playing the Deamon Prince right now and had three battles with Kang-amar-Atoth. All 3 ended in a total party kill. (I always upgrade Eldrich's first) So his minions are just brutal. I think he's the best lieutanent out there. (Don't forget the extra XP for razing cities or killing heros). Just love this guy :)

Can they reinforce 2 at a time (if they have the threat available or just one reinforce per OL turn?

You can purchase as many reinforcements as you are able (and are available physically). They must come from the reinforcement list of the LT and they start OFF the board. You are still limited to a single spawn card though
